I know it is a bit of a pipe dream... but with the perfect candidate (celebrity status, athlete/coach, or Conservative Dem) & low enough approval ratings for Trump...

Either Party can win almost any state with the perfect candidate.

...Any suggestions?

Jim Hood is the only one I can think of, and even he would lose.

Oprah, Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Rice, Faith Hill ... were all born in MS (though I don't see any of them declaring residency and running!)

Mississippi has had a ton of celebrities from there, sadly I don't think many of them would fit the mold as the perfect candidate for the state.

The best Mississippi celebrity candidate might be Gerald McRaney, and he's a republican.

Against Wicker, no chance. Maybe if Wicker were primaried out by a loon, but that's not very likely.

If Cochran were to die or retire, there would be a jungle primary special election with no parties listed. That one could get really good.

Has Hood even expressed interest for the Senate? I've seen things on the Governor's office, which might be doable, especially if Trump is still very unpopular in 2019, but I dunno about the Senate. IIRC, the legislature also moved to reign in Hood's power as AG, and if that actually happened it's not hard to see him looking to move up in the world.

Also, while Hood could run for the Senate seat in 2018 and still keep his position as AG, I don't think he could immediately begin running for Governor right after the election if he were to lose. Aside from funding issues, it'd be bad optics.

I'd rather see Hood run for Governor.

edit: looks like that power-limiting bill failed.

I would like to see that; frankly, a perfect candidate (intrinsic factor) with a perfect storm (extrinsic factor, say a Trump meltdown) could flip MS. Either one could not do the job.

What about Brandon Presley? He's on the state's PSC and I never see his name brought up as a potential candidate for higher office.

Hood would be a better gubernatorial candidate than senate.

Mississippi Dems would basically need a Harold Ford-style candidate in order to have a chance: young, (nominally) black, somewhat conservative, with some sort of claim to fame. It's the only way you'd be able to potentially galvanize black turnout to the levels needed while simultaneously preventing more than 80% of whites from voting for the Republican.

To my knowledge, no one like this exists.
