Why resign now? He could just not run for a fourth term next year. I'm sure he can make sure Volodin wins instead if he wants to.

Putin did get his job by a surprise resignation from Yeltsin, who appointed him, with him subsequently being elected.

I'm going to need more than poorly-written, poorly-sourced articles in tabloids before I take this rumor seriously.

So? A lot of people don't understand anything about their own country's politics, and sourcing articles from trashy British tabloids...

First of all, one russian journalist (Kashin) told in 2016 that he prefers Volodin as Putin's successor. Of course, it means nothing.

Second is yesterday's story. During government meating one official complained to Putin that MP Franz Klinzewitsch had threatened him and sent to this official a letter, in which Klinzewitsch  told that his friend Volodin will be Putin's successor and they both will take revenge. Some MPs сonfirmed the authenticity. So this is just Klinzewitsch's tale. And I think all these events have harmed Volodin's chances to became next president.

Brezhnev ruled the USSR for 18 years from 1964 to 1982, so Putin will tie him in longevity if he were to resign this year.  He still has another 10 years to go if he wants to be around for as long as Stalin though.

Why not just wait until the election next year and stand down? This would be a thoroughly odd move if he went through with it.

If Putin lasts that long I'd hate to be a Moscow doctor in ten years.

So he can decide with certainty who his successor is, and have the Russian people see he already has experience and is truly the hand-picked successor so the election is not in question.

It's how Putin got the job.

They'll know who his successor is anyways, he'll have the UR logo in the ballot
