Pennsylvania is among the most populated states in the Union. It houses a major city and is very historically prevalent. Other states like this have rather famous politicians. A semi-apolitical person may know who Andrew Cuomo or Dianne Feinstein is, but only political junkies outside the state itself have heard of Pat Toomey, Bob Casey, or Tom Wolf. Even moreso, Pennsylvania has produced only one president, and that was over 160 years ago now. Why aren't Pennsylvania politicians more famous to the general public, and why haven't more people from there done at least better in presidential primaries?

Rick Santorum did pretty well. Michigan, Georgia, and Ohio are all almost as large as Pennsylvania, and no one from any of those three states has won more than two states in almost forty years that I recall.

Here Atlas goes again grossly overestimating the name recognition of governors and senators. Mitch McConnell might not even Crack 50%... Cuomo and Feinstein are probably in the 30s in name recognition polls, and only because they're from big states. You have to either run for President, have a sex scandal, or at least be a Sunday show regular to get national name recognition as a politician.

Basically this.

Most people don't even know the names of their own representative or senators.

PA does tend to elect hacks, but Toomey and Meehan and Dent are pretty high profile, and competent. So it is not uniformly dreary.

Didn't Devin Nunes, Adam Schiff, Jim Hines, and other politicians gain name recognition from being on the news frequently?

They probably have a little more name recognition among Sunday show viewers, which are a minority of the politically apathetic population.

This is the third time I'm typing this cuz of lost wi-fi, but to keep it brief, the answer is pretty simple in the lack of a major media market. Philadelphia may be sizable in population, but there is no reason for there to be media coverage here and even less reason for us to care about Harrisburg. Additionally, we lack a major industry like NY/LA/Chicago/DC. We have chemicals/pharma, but our most notable company is obviously in Delaware, so it's really hard to see why relevant happenings would be going on here more than say, Michigan or Wisconsin. (And for the latter, know that the labour movement made Walker a household name and Ryan's ambitious self is hyped by the DC media rather than anything to do with Wisconsin)

In short, media and corporate money. But there are a lot of personal factors that have little to do with the state one is from. Why are Kentucky's Senators both famous?

This is probably completely irrelevant to the thread, but when I ran into Congressman Chuck Fleischmann at the Capitol Visitor Center last year, he assumed that I was from Tennessee because I pointed out how he was first elected in 2010.

Pennsylvania politicians--across both parties--have this terrible tendency to be white, male, boring, and forgettable.

For this reason and this reason alone, we need an "Atlas March on D. C.," where we inform politicians of their entire lives, thus using our addiction to politics and giving it an outlet.
