Had Al Gore won the 2000 presidential nomination over George W. Bush, many people already imagine that John McCain and, surely Rudy Giuliani as well (because of 9/11) would have run for the Republican nomination in 2004.

But who else would have been likely Republican contenders for the Republican nomination in 2004 besides McCain and Giuliani?

Would have the Republican field been slim or big?

George Allen or Jim Gilmore might be likely, maybe Pataki as well has Presidential aspirations. I'm trying to think of whoever else flamed out by 2008.

I think Dick Cheney would have run as well due to his foreign policy experience (as U.S. Secretary of Defense), to his business experience (as CEO of Halliburton) and to the fact that he was the Republican vice-presidential nominee in 2000.

In addition, though he may not have won the nomination in 2004, what could have made him a formidable contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2004 is that Bush narrowly lost the 2000 election and was defeated by less than 46 great electors on the Electoral College and by only 0,5 percentage points in the popular vote.

George Pataki, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Rudy Giuliani, Ron Paul, Lincoln Chafee, Jeb Bush, Kay Hutchison, John Kasich, Elizabeth Dole, Judd Gregg, Colin Powell, John Danforth, Christine Todd Whitman, and Newt Gingrich all come to mind.

Giuliani and Huckabee, as 2008 contenders, would have probably moved up their timetables to run in 2004.  Mitt Romney would not be in a position to do the same due to just being elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002.
