Former California Governor Pete Wilson (1991-1999) runs for and wins the Republican nomination. How does he do against Al Gore in a hypothetical 2000 contest?

Gov. Wilson could have won the 2000 Republican nomination by knocking off Bush and McCain. He picks a conservative firebrand to reinforce his conservatism instead of complementing the ticket with diversity or a geographical/state appeal as previous vice presidential picks do.

A pro-choice candidate nominated by the GOP in 2000? No way.

The most interesting that about having Wilson instead of Bush is how the Hispanic communities in their respective states reacted to their tenure as Governor. Wilson's hostility towards illegal immigrants energized the Hispanic community in California so strongly that he managed to make the California GOP uncompetitive in the state ever since. Bush, on the other hand, was far more liked by Texas Hispanics and he won 35% of Hispanics nationally in 2000 and 40% in 2004.

But Wilson was also more left wing than Bush on a number of issues. The map would look fairly different. I'd suspect Wilson does better in New England and the PNW while underperforming in the sunbelt and Deep South.

I could see Gore winning some more competitive Southern states, aside of Tennessee (which was already close) due to Republican base not turning out for Wilson. At the same time I can see Wilson winning Maine, which was close as well.

Bush would have crushed him in the primaries.

Bush in 2000 had the support of :

The entire establishment( In a very pro establishment election cycle)
Religious Right
Big Business

In fact Wilson's run probably hurts McCain more then Bush

I thought only Gov. Deukmejian was pro-choice and Wilson more conservative.
