I actually saw a persuasive case somewhere that his ruthless slaver ways were Jackson's real personal sin, rather than the Native removals, which were intended to be more humane than slaughtering them all (which is, uh, arguable to say the least)
Yep the geopgraphical nature of the vote with the south most im favor of indian removal makes the motive behind it quite dubious. It does smell of appeaser logic as well, however considering how few cared about protecting them against violence from white squatters removal may have been the only politically acceptable way to reduce tensions and prevent some sort of bloodbath that would screw Native Americans over anyway.
