Since people are throwing around the term so loosely, I think a poll would be appropriate.

always depends which goal-post you need.

it is enough to say nice things about fascists?
trying to get the fascist vote?
having a fascist worldview, campaigning as one or acturally governing like one?

do you need to commit genocide or is erdogan/orban-style enough?

Neither; in order to be a fascist you need to be a fascist. Orbán and Erdogan (and Putin) are authoritarians but no fascists.

99% of people referred to as fascists aren't.

well, i think the idea about being the "sacred people", which is common inside of orban's/erdogan's and putin's philosophy, and the need to make abroad citizens still feel like being part of "the family" is at least an indicator (along with a few other traits) but if we go for a full italian-fascism-like-check-list this is surely quite difficult to argue.

re: marine...she is at a minimum courting fascist voters.

This is true. Also a little concerning when the people throwing this label around wildly then want to assault the people they label as fascists.

No, and people should have stopped using a label as outdated and now meaningless as "fascist" a while ago.

It's a little hyperbolic but really there's no justification for anyone left of center to vote for her.

Nah, there are plenty of things wrong with her that deserve attention without such generic labels.

Why would Macron be more appealing to a Melenchon voter?

Not quite, but she's close enough that using the label as a shortcut isn't too disingenuous.

This. Usually citing to some rando qualitative study by a lefty professor in the late 90s basically post hoc defining "fascism" as icky non leftists the professor disliked. I remember the embarrassing efforts by some here trying to use this study as "proof" that trump is a literal fascist because he is 1. A meanie 2. A capitalist and 3. wants to restore previous greatness which was the professor's bs definition.

Yes, even if it's a fairly soft and cuddly kind.

don't know about your politically privileged americans but it's not soooo hard to find fascist-supporting parties and politicans inside of european parliaments. (a few years earlier joined by stalinists)

No, as far as I can tell she does not support ending democracy, which seems like a crucial part of fascism. I think Jacksonian demagogue is more fitting, although even then I don't think she's proposing anything as bad as Indian removal or slavery.

I don't know whether to be surprised or not on Atlas that a good minority of voters said she is.

Given the obsession that those left-of-center have with throwing around the label (rather counterproductive considering that it diminishes the damage done by real fascists), I'm surprised that it isn't a higher percentage of people saying she is.
