I cant believe some people are comparing the responsibility of laundry/cooking, to the draft and war (fighting in battle).
Really ?

Work is work, and it takes up time in a day to do it. So females are supposed to spend their entire day catering to others? Go to work at a job? Come home and clean house and do laundry and feed the kids and watch the kids while the dad does what? Goes to work? And what else? Oh, and he registers for the draft.

The problem is that it's expected of females -- generally speaking -- to take on more of their share of the work of taking care of a family, not to mention that they are the ones who bear the burden of childbirth. And in modern times females also hold down full time jobs, or at least part time jobs. And now people want them to also register for the draft?

The responsibility in this scenario is extremely lopsided and that's the problem. Men need to start pulling their fair share of the load before we start talking about registering overburdened females for the draft.

I personally wouldn't object to this proposal. Remember that not everyone who tries to join the military is successful in doing so; many are turned away due to physical and/or mental ailments, not meeting military fitness criteria, etc. Similarly, even when people are conscripted, they are still subject to physical and mental screening before they can officially be inducted into the military. Even after people are inducted, not everyone will have the same duties, and some people may even be exempt from certain duties due to physical limitations.

Id rather we achieve equality by eliminating the bad thing rather than just subjecting more people to the bad thing.

There should be no draft.

But since there will always be old, rich, white men in power who have never fought a day in their lives for anything but are all too willing to send our kids off to war...the draft will never go away.

And since it will never go away, it shouldn't single out only one sex.

Agreed.

While Hermit's views on this are definitely sexist, an argument has been made that women are inherently more compassionate/sympathetic than men are, and subjecting women to the draft/military will make women less compassionate. I don't think it holds water though, because the same people that want equality/equal roles for women tend to oppose war and value compassion for both genders.
