Many people are overlooking this, but why has no one talked about Alabama's gubernatorial race in 2018? Bentley's scandal was pretty big, and if a centrist Democrat comes forward (Walt Maddox comes to mind), it could be a shocking Democratic pickup.

I think Ivey's got her head on her shoulders and if she wins the primary probably got a good chance of winning.

If any action happens, it'll be in the senate election in December.

Most people in Alabama just vote straight ticket Republican no matter what. I doubt they know who they vote for otherwise they wouldn't be in the situation they in now.

Roy Moore is not running for Governor, so it's completely Safe R.

Just like LA-Gov was safe R and MD-Gov was safe D!

Well, Republicans had extremely big scandal in LA (and would win with any candidate, but Vitter), and Democrats had both atrocious candidate AND atrocious turnout in MD. I don't see such things in Alabama now, so it's still closer to Safe-R for me now, but - anything may change..

Agreed. I'd originally thought that Ivey could've been swept out easily by a relatively strong candidate but it's looking like Strange fill that role if anyone.

LA-Gov, MD-Gov, MA-Sen 2010, etc. were all open seat races with awful candidates on the losing side. Ivey will be an incumbent (even if an unelected one) and if she performs even somewhat competently (which she has so far) she will be elected.

AL-Gov is interesting and certainly deserves a thread.

Tommy Battle, mayor of Huntsville has announced he's running, and Ivey hasn't officially announced she's seeking reelection (but likely will).

On the dem side (hah!) I've heard rumors about the House Minority Leader, a guy named Craig Ford, and the mayor of Tuscaloosa considering. The former might run as an independent (weird, because he's the House minority leader, but understandable) but neither wants to get in each other's way.

Leaving an open gubernatorial election uncontested would be a bad idea.

Just like LA-Gov was safe R and MD-Gov was safe D!

Well in Lousiana it was Senator Diaper running the worst campaign ever against a very ethical, pretty conservative Democrat, while in Maryland the Democrat was O'Malley's lieutenant and seemed adamant to act like a douche in every appearance, plus 2014 was a wave year for Republicans.

I mean, if someone who was connected at the hip to Governor Bentley managed a narrow primary win I could see it. But I actually think the Senate race is more possible - it has become a veritable clown care between Senator Strange, Roy Moore, Mo Brooks, Ed Henry, all of whom are varying levels of pretty right wing to far right bible wacko and have tons of venom that they will sink toward one another.

Part of what he said was Moore is not running for Governor.

His point is, gubernatorial races are not as partisan. And I agree.

Richard Lindsey, Walter Maddox, and Craig Ford would all be strong candidates.
