The shirt of the Brazilian national soccer team (seleção brasileira) is yellow because it was...

... the color of the House of Habsburg

Until 1950, the Brazilian national soccer team used a white uniform. After the defeat against Uruguay in the World Cup of 1950, Brazil adopted the yellow shirt. Why yellow? Because the losangle in the Brazilian national flag is yellow.

The Brazilian national flag has a green retangle and a yellow losangle because green is the color of the Portuguese House of Bragança and yellow is the color of the Austrian House of Habsburg.
The first model of the flag was designed in 1822, when Brazil became independent. The first Brazilian emperor Pedro I was a member of the House of Bragança, and his Austrian wife Maria Leopoldina was a member of the House of Habsburg.
