It could be the first Southern state to abolish the death penalty.

Louisiana considers ending the death penalty:

While this bill would not be retroactive, it would be one of the biggest moves toward death penalty abolition ever in the United States. Not including WV, no Southern state has abolished the death penalty. Governor Edwards is noncommittal on the issue, which gives death penalty opponents a lot of ground. If the Louisiana Legislature manages to get a death penalty repeal bill to the Governor's desk, it will mean there will have been significant bipartisan support.

I have a hard time believing Governor Edwards would veto a death penalty abolition bill from a strongly Republican Legislature.

The death penalty is beginning to look increasingly barbarous and ineffective in America. If Angola (which I have sardonically renamed "An-GULAG") Penitentiary isn't a deterrent to crime,  then not even death can be.

This is rather amazing to see.  If a Deep South state actually abolishes it, that would almost surely mean the tide has permanently turned on the issue.

Louisiana is 30% Catholic and considering that the church is anti-death penalty, it isn't surprising that this is on the table there. Much of the Republican strength in the state is centered on heavily Catholic parishes.

Awesome! The death penalty is barbaric and useless, and if a state like Louisiana can do it...

Wow. I think Nebraska did this as well(only for the voters to strike it down Angry). This is a good sign. Now we just need to hope that it isn't stopped by the ballot box.

I don't feel overly strongly about this issue - and get very turned off when people act like supporting the execution of a monster makes one "bloodthirsty" - but I support this.  If a state wants to ban the death penalty, I think that's a net positive.

Meh. If we are not willing to work to restructure the appeals system and go back to the guillotine or firing squad, no sense keeping the death penalty.

As someone who is against capital punishment this is very encouraging to me. I also think signing a ban would be quite the feather in Edwards' cap for a hypothetical 2020 run.

The voters will put a stop to it, just like they did in Nebraska and California.  The only place this is gaining steam is among the elite, who want to boost the prison population.

If you do a crime, do the time. Stop making excuses for criminals. We can't have criminals roaming the streets doing their crap that got them in jail.

Eh on this issue.

Because clearly there's absolutely nothing wrong with the U.S. having 25% of the world's prison population when it makes up 5% of the world's total population, right?

He is for prison overcrowding.  It's inhumane.
