Which of truth, kindness, fairness, or justice is most important? Or are some of these too similar to distinguish? Are other values (e.g., beauty) close?

I always liked the values in the motto of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan - veritas, bonitas, pulchritudo, sanctitas.

Truth and Justice though since both are basically synonyms I'll go with truth and kindness .

Kindness is the only one that is always vital. "Justice" is often just revenge, Truth can lead to very bad things in some circumstances and fairness is kind of arbitrary and wierd.

It's kind of scary that less then half of all respondents put kindness in their top two.

What's the difference between justice and fairness? There is only one word for both in my native languages, and I've never managed to understand the difference.

I find fairness is a bit more reconcilable with mercy than justice is.

Truth and kindness are great virtues, so I chose them as important values.  Fairness is a mental construct that does not exist and justice is subjective, often leading to unintended consequences.

Other values might include beauty, chastity, sobriety, wisdom, serenity, and work (although you could argue that the latter is related to kindness.)

The most important value to have is love for the common man, all the other ones will fall in place if you love one another.

In French, justice = justice and fairness= équité ?

Justice is sometimes used as a synonym for fairness, but it has a broader semantic range.  Trying to explain all the different ways the word is used would be very involved.

Huh, interesting. I could see that.

Doesn't "equity" exist as an English word, though? Is it considered a synonym for fairness?

Yes (though it also has a different meaning in finance).

This. An honorable mention would be something along the lines of patience and/or optimism. Basically coping, I guess.

Truth and kindness. The other two will follow suit.

Which is interesting because truth and kindness are probably the  two most opposed values on this list.

The truth is often very unkind.

I picked justice and fairness.

Quite true. There is often tension between truth and kindness.

My understanding about the difference between justice and fairness would be:

Two people are accused of robbing a bank and (suppose for this example) there is a 50-50 chance of guilt for each person. Let's say they flipped a coin to decide which person would be arrested and charged, this would be fairness but not justice.

For the poll, I voted kindness and justice. Beauty is not even close.

Truth & Kindness
Without truth we can not have the others and the worst "unintended" consequences result.
