So, who's gonna follow Gavin Newsom in the lt. governor's office?

I think that senate pro tem Kevin de Leon (D) has a decent chance to win this contest. Interesting is that no Republican has been elected to the second-highest office since 1970, although there have been three two-term Republican governors. The only GOPer to hold the office since then was Abel Maldonado for a few months in 2010 after being appointed by the governator.

I still hope the separate elections will be abolished and the two candidates run on a ticket.

Mike Curb was elected in 1978 and really put a damper on Brown's ability to travel in his second term.

De León is a pretty safe bet, I think.

Due to the Republican's weak bench, the most talented Republicans are going to run for Governor.

For Democrats, there's enough competition that big city mayors will run for the office (and the #4 in the Democratic US House leadership would accept being state AG.)

The only serious Republican candidate for 2018 with a slight chance is Kevin Faulconer. He would make it to the second round against Gavin Newsom, but then lose by at least seven percentage points. (But I agree that Neel Kashkari was a good candidate in 2014).

No. Newsom would run up the margins in the Bay Area and LA that would offset any strength Faulconer has in the San Diego area. It wouldn't be the 20-25% win a generic D would get against a generic R, but it would definitely be a double digit win.

Newsom has his issues but "San Francisco liberal" and same-sex marriage are not one of them in 2018 California.

Anybody think it would be weird if Newsom were governor of California and his ex-wife were Trump's Press Secretary?

Newsom is kinda slimy and I would find it kind of scary to have him as governor and also have someone with the goods on Newsom in Trump's inner circle.

Of course, Trump may not be President in 2019....
