Now, Trump certainly didn't win Connecticut or anything, but it cannot be denied that he did better in New England than past Republican nominees since 2008. Trump won a lot more precincts in New England than Romney or McCain did.

My question is, what exactly made Trump do so decent in New England even compared to the past GOP nominee who was from Massachusetts?

FALSE!

It was in fact per the exit poll the exact same margin, R+20, both times.

He was less of a cringey elitist and he used less family values hokum in his campaign rhetoric. Culturally, Romney was a Utahn, and only a Massachusetts man as a representative of the exurbs.

Hillary was unpopular with white working class voters in New England compared to previous candidates. Also trump ignored social issues and appealed to the illusion that america could go back to the manufacturing golden days of the 50s/60s which got him people that voted for democratic candidates before.

The real question is why did Romney get crushed that badly in New England?

Because New England is not the same place it was in 1976 and WASPiness is no longer enough to win these areas.

1. Obama was extremely popular in New England.
2. NE shifted to the left over the years while the GOP shifted to the right.
