Unless he's elected, probably not at all.

50 years down the line, who really remembers whom? Hillary will also be barely remember & so would Obama & Clinton. Unless you are big game transformational president or personality, it is kind of hard to make that kind of a mark.

Surely, he will remember among historians & in nerd circles but that's about it. If he can run for POTUS in 2020 & win, then he has a chance to be a historical figure much like FDR (LBJ did get a lot done in 4-5 years !)

If we have become a socialist nation by then, he'll be remembered as someone who was instrumental in beginning to claw us away from capitalism.

If we are a still a capitalist nation, he'll be remembered as a devoted activist for crazy ideas that we wisely never enacted into law.

The fight for Bernie's ideas will probably live on even after his death. This isn't Bernie Sanders' alone - Universal healthcare (public one) has been a fight of the Dems for almost a 100 years - From FDR to Harry Truman to Ted Kennedy. Tuition fees used to be free or very cheap. Taxes for almost 50 years used to much MUCH higher.

It is highly unlikely when every major nation has universal healthcare that the fight for it will die down after Bernie & those ideas will be looked as crazy !

I can imagine him as a kind of Goldwater type -- somebody who never quite "made it" because they were ahead of their time politically, but whose influence mushrooms after their failed moment in the sun, and whose policies eventually become widely accepted.

Agreed. Someone who was a sacrificial lamb to get his movement started.

What Henry Clay was to Abraham Lincoln.

What William Jennings Bryan was to Franklin Roosevelt.

What Barry Goldwater was to Reagan.

Bernie Sanders will be that very same foreshadowing figure for the next realigning Democratic President and the next great Democratic majority from 2024 onwards.

Can't wait for President Gabbard to start a Progressive Revolution in the 2020s.

Somewhere between Debs and McGovern, an unapologetic leftist rabble-rouser who never quite reached the top but pushed the overton window far to the left for a while.
