Who does Abbott appoint to replace Cornyn if he is chosen to be the new FBI director, and who is likely to run for Whip?

Predictions:
Senator: McCaul
Whip: Thune

I'm betting on the Lt. Governor, but I'm no expert on Texas.

I haven't been keeping up with the FBI stuff and just stumbled across this thread. Please tell me this is a random rhetorical question and Jon Cornyn is not seriously a candidate for FBI director. Never mind, of course he is. This administration is the worst in history.

What is the law on special elections in Texas?  If Cornyn is confirmed as FBI director, would both seats be up in 2018 or would the special for the open seat happen sooner?

I don't think the appointee would be Patrick as he is out there enough that could plausibly lose when there are literally hundreds of better choices for the TX GOP.

When Lloyd Bentsen went to the Clinton Cabinet, TX gov appointed a temporary replacement and there was a special election in June 1993 that KBH won.

Context. You can't compare the 1850s to now, for several reasons.

Thune would likely replace him as whip. I'd imagine McCaul would run against a Castro brother for the seat.

Yeah, I think Skeletor is a shoo-in for whip, unfortunately.

This
This. McCaul would likely be appointed and face Joaquin Castro. The race would get lots of national attention, only to see McCaul crush Castro by 15 or so.

Hypothetically, if this does happen, isn't there a possibility that the special election is scheduled for 2018 and we could see each Castro brother running for a seat? Would this impact the results in the elections?

Cornyn without his Senate career would be as qualified as many, if not most, FBI Directors. His partisan position as Whip is the only thing that makes me doubt his qualifications

1. The special would be in 2017.
2. Not sure people would like the idea of twins controlling the state's entire Senate delegation. The Castro brothers are generic Democrats who run on identity politics, and many people don't like political families. I think the two running for the two seats together would actually backfire, IMO.

Yeah; that's what I had thought. I wonder if it would impede one brother's chances in the future if the other won a statewide office first.

I think Dan Patrick is so bad he could genuinely lose in a special election, but IDK.

I hope his replacement as senator will be Will Hurd. He's probably too moderate for Texas Republicans though. Hurd has potential but the problem is that he very well might lose his house seat in the upcoming Democratic wave.

Hurd is probably screwed anyway, so a Senate appointment would be good for him.

McCaul or Hurd would be okay choices, so naturally he'd be replaced by hack Dan Patrick or inside trader Ken Paxton Tongue

Any chance Abbott would appoint himself?
