Don't the Dems realize that Hillary Clinton will not be president if he's impeached but it would be Mike Pence? What's their purpose in wanting him impeached?

Because almost literally anything is better than this.

Not a Dem, but my take: because he's a terrible, dangerous, incompetent, and apparently criminal President.  Pence might be worse for policy, but at this point I'll take normalcy over policy.  Some things are more important than politics.

As has been pointed out, Trump has gone from being someone with disliked or dangerous politics (from the perspective of the left) to someone who is dangerous because he's impulsive and stupid.

Pence will probably be WORSE than Trump for accomplishing things the left doesn't want, but at least he'll be more able than Trump at the job.

They don't like Pence but he is at least stable and rational, Trump is neither. Pence also likely can't win a national election. Pence isn't seen as someone for the common man and his far right, religiousness will turn off a lot more people outright.

I'm torn between, on the one hand, wanting to deal Trump the utter humiliation of being impeached a few months into his term and restoring some feeling of normalcy, and on the other hand really wanting a massive Democratic landslide in 2018. It's your choose Republicans!

Policies, laws and regulations can be reversed, re-written or overturned. Any destruction of norms, standards, cultures and/or diplomatic relations, on the other hand, are not as easily restored.

Also, in purely power-political terms, the GOP-controlled Senate would have to vote for it. The Republican base would revolt and the ensuing fallout would poison the Pence Presidency. So no real danger of dumping Trump being an electoral boon for Republicans.
