Charlie Baker/Condoleezza Rice!

That said, I think Huntsman, as a Trump supporter with foreign policy experience, Mia Love, Mary Fallin, or Joni Ernst would give the best credentials and balance to Baker.

Why do you think Condi would help the top of the ticket, I mean she would easily be tied to Iraq and Bush's foreign policy that she would bring the ticket down

Her popularity among the electorate, as well as the fact that she offers widespread appeals to both George W. Bush style "compassionate conservatives" due to her connection with his administration and more socially moderate Republicans.

Charlie Baker Wins South Carolina, Warren Takes Nevada

Charlie Baker took a large step towards winning the Republican nomination, by defeating Donald Trump in the South Carolina Primary. Aided by the support of the party establishment, including Former Governor Nikki Haley, Baker was able to cobble together a narrow coalition to beat Trump. Baker secured 41% of the vote, to Trump's 39%, Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, finished third with 19%. Baker's first win in the south sets him up as Trump's main rival heading into the Super Tuesday contests, and the divided conservative vote seems to be a strategy paying off.

"I think Ben Sasse is helping Charlie Baker, because it's drawing away voters that might otherwise go to Trump," said GOP Strategist Karl Rove. "Baker in a one on one race would lose to Trump, but a fractured vote is helping him."

Baker, thanked his supporters on Saturday, calling their victory "major" and proclaimed he was going to fight all the way to November. "We're going to win this election and turn America around!"

Donald Trump, was notably silent on primary night. He did not address his supporters as had following his loss in New Hampshire, and only issued a brief tweet in the form of a concession.

On the Democratic side in Nevada, Elizabeth Warren again defeated former Secretary of State and Vice President Joe Biden, 46% to 44%. This is Biden's third straight loss to the Massachusetts Senator, but his campaign signaled an upbeat note, again putting all their efforts in South Carolina.

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo withdrew from the race after three poor showings in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. He announced he was endorsing Biden, and pledged to 'help unite the Democratic ticket'.

Joe Biden Crushes Warren In South Carolina Primary
Aided by the support from African-Americans, Joe Biden soundly defeated rival Elizabeth Warren in the South Carolina Primary. Biden captured 72% of the vote, to Warren's 27%. Biden's first victory of the 2020 campaign and a major win for the former Vice President and Secretary of State. Biden's campaign claims the victory gives them needed momentum to take on Warren on Super Tuesday. Already, the Biden campaigning has been blitzing the airwaves with ads in Minnesota, Illinois and California.

National polls still show a tight race between the two Democrats, with Warren taking 47% to Biden's 45%.

Donald Trump Rebounds, but can he Recover?
Donald Trump kept Charlie Baker from winning a trio of victories, but winning the Nevada Caucuses. Trump prevailed ahead of Baker with 43% of the vote, while the Massachusetts Governor captured 40%. Senator Ben Sasse, again finished third with 17%. Trump's victory comes after his loss to Baker in South Carolina; a state he was widely expected to win.

The win in Nevada, was partially expected, given Trump's name and time in the states, but Baker's increased momentum allowed him to close only three points behind Trump, leaving many pundits to wonder what to make of Trump's chances on Super Tuesday.

In the typically conservatives states, Trump is expected to do well, though the continued presence of Ben Sasse may prove to be an issue as the divided conservative vote allowed for South Carolina to go to Baker over Trump.

Nationally, Trump's lead has collapsed, after two back-to-back losses in NH and SC. He currently leads the field with 42%, compared to Baker's 39%.

Biden & Warren Neck and Neck on Super Tuesday

Pres. Clinton Speaks on Democratic Race; Democrats Privately 'Concerned'
The protracted battle for the Democratic Nomination between Senator Elizabeth Warren and Former Secretary of State Joe Biden, has many party insiders worried, including the President who offered her assessments on the 2020 race. "We as Democrats have always had spirited primaries," President Hillary Clinton said to ABC's Robin Roberts. "My first two primaries in 2008 and 2016 were hard thought and long, and I expect this one will follow suit." The President did stress her concern about a united Democratic Party. "We must do everything we can to unite as one party, because the choice is between Donald Trump and Donald Trump."

In jest, the President referred to newly minted GOP frontrunner, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker as "a Trump wannabe", a decision seen by many as trying to portray the Baystate Governor as being lock in step with the outspoken former 2016 nominee.

Privately, a Baker nomination causes great fear in Democratic Party circles, given the Governor's more moderates stances, and his cross-partisan appeal. To many Democrats, there is lingering hope over a divisive GOP primary, which could force Donald Trump to run as a third party candidate, effectively splitting the Republican vote. Even, Senator Chuck Schumer, a critic of Trump as voiced his hope the Donald will run third party.

"He has ever right to run," Schumer said to reporters on Capitol Hill. "I don't think he'll win, but he shouldn't give up without a fight."

Current polls show Charlie Baker performing better than Trump against either Elizabeth Warren or Joe Biden. 46% to 40%, would back Baker over Warren, and 45% to 42% would back Baker over Biden.

Trump polls 43% to Warren's 44%, and 42% to Biden's 45%.

KS, LA, ME & NE

Baker Crushes Trump in Trio of GOP Contests
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, dispatched with 2016 Republican nominee Donald Trump,
easily with three decisive wins in Kansas, Louisiana and Maine. Donald Trump's best performance was in Maine, but Baker's presence in the New England region tipped the scales in his favor. He bested Trump, 46% to 43%.

These new wins by Baker have many party leaders calling on Donald Trump to exit the race, even former rival and Ben Sasse supporter Ted Cruz said, "it is mathematically impossible for anyone in the race, other than Governor Baker to win the Republican nomination.

Baker, who in the past has been critical of Trump, has laid off attacking his fellow rival, instead saying "I am focused on running my campaign and connecting with as many people as I possibly can."

Elizabeth Warren wins, NE, KS. Biden Takes LA & ME
Senator Elizabeth Warren won big victories in both Nebraska and Kansas's caucuses over the weekend. She defeated former Vice President and Secretary of State Joe Biden with 62% in Nebraska and 67% in Kansas. Biden, managed to defeat Warren in Maine, with 59% of the vote, and pulled an upset win over Warren in Maine, (beating her 51% to 49%) a caucus she was widely expected to win.

However, these new contests have yielded no new results for the two rivals, furthering the concern among many party insiders of a protracted primary battle, and quite possibly a brokered convention. The next major contests facing the Democrats are: Michigan, Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii.
Nationally, Warren has reclaimed a slight lead over Biden, 48% to 45%.

Charlie Baker: The GOP's Best Hope
After three straight losses, the Republican Party is desperately searching for a path back to the White House, and Charlie Baker, the Governor of Massachusetts and the unlikeliest of candidates seems to be on a gliding path to winning the Republican nomination, and quite possibly the Presidency in November.

Baker, a moderate Republican, in a party largely dominated by conservatives ran a bare-bones campaign in all the early states, but played hard in New Hampshire, a state once declared by Donald Trump, as "Trump Country". Baker, who won the primary narrowly over Trump, was able to play up the divided conservative vote, to defeat Trump in South Carolina, and from there amass momentum to take on the 2016 nominee on Super Tuesday, which resulted in him cracking Trump''s line of defense in the South: Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee all fell to Baker, as did the big states of Illinois, Virginia and California. All three were won by Trump in the 2016 primary.

"I think the success of Baker has been the partnership with Sasse, I guess that's what you can call it," said former GOP strategist Steve Schmidt. "In 2016, Republicans failed to unite behind one candidate, and then play to their strengths in order to stop Trump. They allowed Trump to define them, and after it was too late were playing catchup. Baker saw this early, and laid the groundwork and it has beautifully paid off for him."

There still exists the possibility of a Trump third party bid, which would likely hand the White House over to either Elizabeth Warren or Joe Biden. However, Baker campaign officials are saying privately, there are concerned, but believe they will be able to bring aboard many of Trump's supporters in the event Baker does in fact win the Republican nomination.

Why didn't Biden win Hawaii? After all, it's Barack Obama's native state, though it's true that Bernie Sanders won big there in 2016.

Baker Clinches the Republican Nomination
Charlie Baker's narrow win in New Hampshire, over Donald Trump may very well have been the moment he won the Republican nomination for President. Any other result, may likely have dragged out the primary process, with Trump possibly becoming the nominee -- or even worse, the GOP facing a brokered convention, with Trump holding the lead in delegates.

However, fate, or perhaps a smarter Republican Party banded together to defeat Donald Trump in the Presidential primary. The divided conservative vote, aided by Republican Senator Ben Sasse helped disable Trump's path to the nomination and ensured Baker's victory.

For establishment Republican Baker's win was a vanquishing of Trumpism, which defined the party largely from the 2010 election, and throughout the Obama years, before finally reaching its apex in the 2016 election. Trump's loss to Hillary Clinton weakened the populist charge, but Trump's outsize personality, and determination to spin his loss on the Republican Party's fault, made him a force to be reckon with in 2020. For Baker, winning the nomination was only half the battle. He needed to unite a still fractured party, and to his team the first step began with a running mate selection.

As for Donald Trump, despite constant protests and threats of running a third party, Trump seemed more than glad to exit the Presidential contest stage, once it became clear Baker could not be toppled. In a similar fashion to his loss in 2016, Trump exited the race with unexpected grace, and even a dash of humility.

Trump ends his campaign in April, after losing Pennsylvania to Baker, 51% to 42%.

"Today we end our campaign for the presidency," Trump said making a rare speech off a teleprompter. "But our cause will endure, and I only ask that Governor Baker take heed of the millions of forgotten Americans crying out for help and assistance and want their country back." Before exiting behind the curtain, a reporter called out and asked if Trump would be endorsing Charlie Baker for President, and to which Trump responded in typical fashion -- thumbs up.

A subtle, but important gesture, particularly for the Baker team as they headed into the convention phase of the election. Trump was out of the race, but his impact loomed large. He would never be the Vice Presidential nominee, but there needed to be someone who could balance the ticket and provide an important grassroots factor.

The Baker team assembled a final list following Trump's departure. At the top of the list was Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, (who withdrew from the race the day after Trump). Sasse, was a staunch conservative, from the heartland, who could help win over voters, particularly Trump voters who might otherwise be turned off by Baker's moderate positions. Sasse, lobbied hard for the job, and stayed in the race, in part with the hope of earning the VP nod, but for Baker, while appreciative of Sasse for his efforts did not have the personal relationship or rapport with Sasse, he felt was needed to be successful.

Other names included, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Former Ambassador and Governor of Utah Jon Huntsman, Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, South Dakota Senator John Thune and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

The Baker campaign planned to announce the ticket the weekend before the convention, in order to generate excitement and enthusiasm.

Leading up to the convention and VP rollout, Baker and his team began laying the groundwork for the general election campaign. Trump, despite his faults as a candidate did manage to win both Ohio and Iowa in 2016, and narrowly lost both North Carolina and Florida to Hillary Clinton. With both Ohio and Iowa trending in the Republican direction, the Baker campaign believed they needed to pickup up both Florida and North Carolina, and then crack the GOP's fools good of Pennsylvania or the Democrat's Blue Wall in the Midwest.

Fortunately, for Baker polling showed him in a stronger position against both Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden. A combination of Democratic Party fatigue and unpopularity over President Clinton's tenure made 2020 increasingly look within reach for the Republican Party.

✓ Charlie Baker: 2,749 (49.61%)
