How do his hardcore supporters react? That's what I'm worried about.

I do not care one bit. Whether he resigns today or two years or whenever I want the alt right gone from the Party for elevating this man over fifteen other competent Republican candidates and embarrassing us. Today and the last week alone proves this man is the worst Republican president in history.

He has brought shame on the GOP and aligned us with Russia's leadership. That is pretty bad.

If Pence is the nominee in 2020, what will his voting coalition look like? Closer to Romney or Trump's?

Pence would not win.

One scenario: Trump resigns before he can be impeached, is not prosecuted for whatever reason, challenges Pence in a primary, wins, and is the Republican nominee for president in 2020.

Weirder things have happened.

That would make an interesting movie.

If Pence gets primaried in 2020, you would be correct. Incumbents who get primaried always loose the general election (see Taft, Ford, Carter, and HW Bush).
