In Stalin's Russia, I could either see death as a rural resident owing to starvation, or death as a Party member owing to purges. I'm unfamiliar on the specifics of Maoist China (especially after the 1950's), and not little to nothing of North Korea. Given the (purely self-interested) choice between 1930's Russia and 1930's Germany as a white male, I would have to reluctantly choose the latter.

While the statement is true, they didn't kill anyone specifically for being Catholic or atheist. Also "Catholic/atheist" as a term makes no sense, since the two categories are mutually exclusive, "they killed Catholics and/or atheists too" is probably what you meant.

No, that's not what I meant.  You can be a lapsed or cultural Catholic and a largely closet Atheist at the same time, as I can attest.  So potentially two (unlikely) reasons to die.

But I'm dirty blonde/blue-eyed, so I'd probably be okay, and the USSR sounds like even more of a hellscape.

ETA:  After second thought, on moral grounds if you have a choice I think you have to go with 30s USSR even though its way less pleasant an existence.

Are we being 100% selfish for the purposes of this exercise, I'm guessing?  I'll throw out the Communist ones, as I could see us being put to death eventually, so that leaves Nazi Germany.  While it would be terrifying and really mess with my moral perception of myself, I'm of German descent, have a very German name and have Germanic features (dirty blonde hair, blue/green eyes, a more Scandinavian facial structure, etc.), so if I kept my mouth shut I'd be okay.
