Politico

I agree with the leadership on not rushing to impeachment -let the investigation take its natural course first, however much time it takes.

Or if these activists were strategic at all, they would hope he doesn't get impeached, because a competent President Pence would actually be able to do a lot that a dogged Trump can't. Not even to mention the fact that leaving Trump in office is probably the best way to maximize theor gains electorally.

Getting the criminal madman away from The Button, and out of the White House is more important than left vs. right politics.

Yes.

At this rate I would prefer Pence getting more of the Republican agenda through knowing that he isn't crazy than Trump getting little through even at the expense of not making electoral gains. Trump cannot be trusted at this point and is doing irreparable damage to our civic institutions.

Tbh this is why I want President Pence/Ryan, whoever isn't complicit, aside from the whole preserving the Republic.

I can see why. The Congressional Democrats must be bored out of their minds: no House bills to block, no congressional hearings to hold, no congressional hearings to adjourn, can't subpoena anybody, no legislative agenda, no party platform, can't manage a full Senate filibuster to save their lives, etc. How the GOP can live with such stupefaction is anyone's guess, but the prospect of impeachment takes the edge off.

This is because there is nothing there.

Therefore the best outcome for Democrats is to slow down the investigation at least until 2018, preferably 2020.

I agree. Pence would be characterized as a "normal" Republican and many people would likely be defused if Trump was removed from office. Much of the enthusiasm for the 2018 and 2020 elections would dissipate.

The smart thing to do is make the Republicans own Trump and not let the GOP get away with disowning him if things continue to implode.
