Democratic primaries:

1960: John F. Kennedy
1964: Lyndon B. Johnson by default.
1968: Robert F. Kennedy. Eugene McCarthy or George McGovern at the convention.
1972: George McGovern. The others are either awful or just bland (with the exception of Chisholm perhaps, though I still would have preferred McGovern).
1976: Frank Church with Brown as a close second.
1980: Edward M. Kennedy
1984: Alan Cranston
1988: What a mediocre bunch. Seriously, this has to be the worst Democratic primary field ever. Most of the candidates were either tainted by scandal (Hart, Biden, Jackson) or unexciting (Dukakis, Gore, Babbitt, Gephardt). That leaves Simon then, but it would be without much enthusiasm.
1992: Jerry Brown was the best of this bunch.
1996: Bill Clinton by default
2000: Bill Bradley
2004: Dennis Kucinich. Of the 'serious' contenders - Dean.
2008: Dennis Kucinich again. Obama out of the final two.
2012: Barack Obama by default

Given all the random 'blast from the past' 2016 candidates, I've thought of another one.

Primary votes choosing only from candidates who did not hold office at the time of their run

1972: Eugene McCarthy (Democratic)
1976: Sargent Shriver (Democratic)
1980: Harold Stassen (Republican)
1984: George McGovern (Democratic)
1988: Harold Stassen (Republican)
1992: Eugene McCarthy (Democratic)
1996: Alan Keyes (Republican)
2000: Bill Bradley (Democratic)
2004: Howard Dean (Democratic)
2008: Mike Gravel (Democratic)
2012: Buddy Roemer (Republican)

Primaries:

Dems:

2016 (still in the future o/c but wtvr) - Sanders
2008 - Mike Gravel
2004 - Howard Dean
2000 - Bill Bradley
1992 - Jerry Brown
1988 - Ugh, Simon I suppose. Or Traficant as a protest against the sh**tiness of the field. Though I'd would've been Biden had he remained in.
1984 - Probably McGovern.
1980 - Kennedy or Brown
1976 - Kind of a weak but nonetheless interesting field with lots of strong personalities (unlike '88 which was full of bores). Moonbeam would be tempting as a clean break from the past in the aftermath of Watergate; Harris would be good too.
1972 - Gotta be McGovern here.
1968 - I would guess RFK
1960 - HHH or Morse

Pubs:

2016 - TRUMP
2012 - Gingrich or Paul. Cain had he remained in.
2008 - Giuliani or Paul
2000 - McCain
1996 - Keyes
1992 - Buchanan
1988 - Kemp, or perhaps Stassen out of sympathy
1980 - Anderson
1976 - Ford
1972 - McCloskey lol
1968 - Nixon
1964 - Goldwater
1960 - Bender because it's such a funny name
