I'd prefer Brewer. His appeal in Wichita will be very valuable in the general.

This, plus I think he'd win Johnson County too.

Brewer was a member of the Mayors Against Illegal guns and is pro-choice. Those are terrible positions to have in Kansas.

I agree. Democrats aren't gonna win this purely based on Brownback's atrocities, unfortunately. Also, while Brewer would probably run it up in Wichita, we saw in the KS-04 special that the right Democrat can do the same as long as he checks the boxes on issues like abortion and guns, which Svaty seems to do.

The Koch Brothers won't like this guy's previous occupation though, so I'd expect a lot of money to be poured into this one.

Endorsed! Always nice to see a Democrat that isn't beholden to Tom Perez.

I think this is the first time you and I are ever going to agree on a non-Presidential candidate.

No. Tossup at best. Kansas is still very republican state (especially - western 2/3). But it's the best chance for Democrats in years.

Any word on whether Orman will jump in or not? I read something saying he is considering a run.

I endorsed Svaty the moment he announced (drove 2 hours to attend the announcement) but if Minority Leader Jim Ward jumps in, Svaty will have a tough path to the nomination. A decent number of activists are upset about his abortion stance. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario. Risk pissing off primary voters but have a better chance in the general vs getting primary voters but sinking general election chances.

I heard the mayor of Lawrence, KS may enter the race as well. That would likely split the progressive vote with Ward (if he runs) and make Svaty's path a little easier. Ward and Brewer would most certainly be locked in a tough fight to win Sedgwick County.

Word is Orman is considering a run but I don't see how he can win this. If he enters and inevitably delivers the race to somebody like Kobach he will totally ruin his name.

Endorsed! Greg Orman, Paul Davis, Troy Findley, or Mark Parkinson would make a good running mate.

Uh, Mark Parkinson is a former Governor who has shown no interest in running for office ever again, let alone for a lower profile one. Troy Findley is similarly retired and done from politics, and doesn't really offer anything that another candidate wouldn't. Paul Davis is running for KS-2, and should at least give Republicans a run for their money there. Orman, I don't know.

FWIW, I think Svaty would be wise to try and convince Brewer to be his LG. Brewer doesn't really seem that electable in his own right, but with him on the ticket, Svaty could probably carry Sedgwick County (which is probably a requirement for a Democrat to win statewide now).

+100. I also thought about something along lines of Alaska-2014. After all - both Kansas and Alaska are usually Republican, and that requires non-standard approach to election. It's not a California or Hawai, where you can simply run a standard liberal  and win without many problems...

That'll make this very, VERY interesting and worth watching.

Would the Democrats endorse him again?  I'd say yes, but only if his poll numbers are stellar.

Pretty frustrating if the state's entire slate of Dem rising stars all decide to run for the same office.
