Yes, it should have been gotten rid of in 1832. Abolish the House of Lords, as well. These are all complete anachronisms and at this point they are just glorified PR agents living off the public teat. But even that value is diminished as it is a reminder for many of the horrors of the British Empire.

"Horrors of the British Empire"

The only horror of the greatest empire in world history is that it's not still around to spread the beauty and wisdom of Anglo-Saxon civilization with the rest of the world.

Still horrible to many. The Northern Ireland conflict, the Israel-Palestine conflict, the India-Pakistan conflict, the Iraq-Kuwait conflict which led to both Iraq wars which led to ISIS... all started with the British Empire, my friend. And that's just naming a few.

They were chopping each others' heads off before we got there.

I obviously don't support instituting monarchies where they're not present,

So if the tiny Republic of Georgia, whose Monarchy was only abolished by their conquest at the hands of Russia in the 19th century, were to overwhelmingly vote to restore their Monarchy, that would be opposed?

No, since it's now more cultural than political. But don't spend as much money on it.

I suppose I'm nominally a republican but it's not something which exercises me particularly. This issue is cosmetic. I think it was Orwell who speculated that a socialist Britain would in all likelihood maintain the monarchy.
