I'm not sure which is paid more, but one complains a lot more about not being paid enough than the other one does.

Ideally, both would be paid much more than they are now. If I had to choose one, I'd go with teachers.

I have no idea and I guess it depends on a lot of things, but I think most people should have roughly the same standard of living regardless of their job (or lack thereof) so that's not a very interesting issue to me.

Not "automated" maybe, but Computer89's SHOCK at such a sentiment coming from self-identified socialists is definitely knee-jerk and intellectually incurious.

I'm not sure which is paid more, but one complains a lot more about not being paid enough than the other one does.

If you have never heard anyone kvetching about getting by on an E4's salary, then you have never had a conversation within thirty miles of an Army reservation.

Actually, I have on multiple occasions, including being on a military base for my father's promotion to Major and the command thereof.

They are both professions where it seems there is a general consensus on them being underpaid.

Soldier and teacher are both very hard jobs doing very important work. The idea that they should not be paid a better than average wage seems like a very bad idea to me (especially teacher, since it requires more educational preparation).

A teacher is about the most important job we can name, so that's how I voted.

Of course we ought to require them to get graduate degrees and we should do away with tenure (so the incompetent ones can be fired), but yeah I would think that a beginning, incoming public school teacher's salary should probably be about two or three times the salary of a beginning, incoming ensign (or second lieutenant's) salary.  Now, for those who stick with it, I think it should level out.  For example, I do not think that a teacher with 30 years experience should be paid more than a one-star Admiral/General salary.

Well, a major wouldn't have reason to complain about pay, no.

His original comment makes more sense now. A typical officer's kid may as well live thirty miles away from post for all of the time he's likely to spend around enlisted soldiers and their families, especially those with the lowest pay.

I actually know quite a few enlisted families and regularly talk to the child of one. I don't hear my relations who are teachers complain, just hear about them complaining on social media from my family.
