I wonder what the intolerant prudes here think of the fact that Comedy Central frequently plays the movie completely unedited leaving all the swearing in (including that great and hilarious Terrance and Phillip "Unclef ucker" song) If it pisses them off, good.

Nope, not at all. It's cable television anyways, so the government has no business censoring it.

I don't care about deliberately pissing the reactionaries off, but I do care about censoring.  Come on people, you can shield kids away from swearing until you're blue in the face, but they'll still use them anyway.

People watch Comedy Central?  Of the few channels Canada has that is worth watching, Comedy Network is superior in every way to Comedy Central.

And no, I really couldn't give a damn about unedited movies.  I wish they'd show the director's cut of Team America.

No.  It's cable television, which means they can air what they wish.  However, since Comedy Central is pretty good about knowing who their viewers are, they tend to show the uncensored programs after 10pm (at least in my area).

hehehe . . . the problem only arises when you are confusing humor for fact.  Saying Canada isn't a real country is comedy, since it IS a real country.  Mexico, on the other hand . . .  Wink

Well, yeah, we all know that Mexico is just a place where hispanics from other countries who were too lazy to hop America's border stopped. Wink

I think cenorship is the most idiotic thing the government does. Even on public stations such as ABC, FOX, NBC, etc. they shouldn't censor them. If you have a probably with uncensored TV, don't watch it.

I swore only once as a kid, and not only did I get the soap treatment from my teacher who heard me, but when I got home, I got the soap from mom and the hand from dad.  Didn't swear any more until I was in the Navy.  hahaha

Ahhh, but we get back into the argument of pushing one persons views upon someone else using public funds.  While it may be an inconvenience for you to not hear swearing on the public channels, it's more of a burden for those who do not wish to subjected to it.  So, the government has to meet the common good while doing the least damage.  In this case, it's censoring out offensive materials.

No, it's not wrong, many parts of the movie are hilarious and the government can stay out of cable

As to the wanting to play Team America uncensored that's fine too, many parts of that are extemely funny like the theme song and the fight between the FAG guild and team America, I would however have to switch channels during that one scene (you know what i mean) because while, yeah sure that stuff is dandy and what not, plastic dolls aren't really enjoyable to watch and i found it very odd.

Uhm, that sounds pretty contradictory to me. When the government censors, it is pushing one person's or group's view upon others with public funds - where do you think the FCC gets it's money? People just need to use those damn V-Chips that they pressed for, then censorship would be unnecessary because they would block the offensive content without forcing those of us who don't care to deal with it.

People just need to use those damn V-Chips that they pressed for, then censorship would be unnecessary because they would block the offensive content without forcing those of us who don't care to deal with it.

My only problem with the V-Chip (and other options out there) is that they tend to block the whole program rather than just the offensive parts.  This is why I think the basic cable carriers should look to see who is viewing at what time blocks and air their programs accordingly.  "The clean version of South Park, the movie, will be shown at 8pm.  The movie version will be shown at 10pm."  (Or something like that.)  No one can tell them what they can or can't do, but on the other hand, they should appeal to their viewers and try to accomodate to ensure they keep their viewing base.  Otherwise, the company risks the viewer turning off the channel and never coming back.

As far as the government goes, it's not really contradictory.  Take the first episode of StarGate SG-1 for example (first aired on Showtime I believe).  There was about a 10 second shot of a naked woman being implanted with an alien critter into her body.  It was shown just for the shock aspect, yet didn't add anything to the story line.  Once released by Showtime to basic cable, the scene was rebroadcasted, but this time with the video focused just on the ladies face.  The story didn't change and nothing was lost in the process (and, it's now one of the most successful cable shows ever).  Additionally (keeping with Sci-Fi for the moment), shows like Battlestar Galatica and Farscape got around the use of swear words by creating their own variations.  This has been acceptable in many of the conservative watchdog groups, yet doesn't take away from the emotion or meaning during the program when spoken.  If these shows were to be shown on public channels, they would not have to be edited, yet you lose nothing in the censorship process either.  This is why the guidelines (and what I mentioned earlier) aren't very contradictory.

No one's mentioned that they only air the uncensored version from 1-3 AM, so I have no problem with it. I remember the first time they aired the movie, it was awesome that a cable station took such a risky step since the response could have been as bad as the Superbowl "wardrobe malfunction". Since its on in the middle of the night though, the prudes don't seem to care.

Yes Pym having standards is "prudish". Why should the children of the US have to be exposed to the tits of some lousy skank?
