While the Dukakis campaign has gotten much well-deserved flak for the 1988 debacle, one line of Bush stands out in my mind.
I believe it was during the first debate, on Sunday, September 25, 1988, when Bush was asked about abortion. His response, which started with "I haven't sorted out the penalties..." was met with derision and boos.
Suppose, instead of this, he had said something like "Abortion is a very sensitive, very personal subject, and we all have our opinions about it. However, as your President, I would NEVER vote for any law or policy that would stand between a woman and her doctor on this issue."
In other words, come out as unhesitatingly pro-choice (as he had been prior to joining the ticket with Reagan, and as his wife is).
What would happen? Discuss with maps and/or demographic analysis if you wish.
