Other: "No, he's not thinking about electoral politics anymore since the last time he ran for anything was ~17 years ago."

Al Gore is probably not thinking of running in 2020, unless the Democratic Party faces a ideological or lackluster presidential field crisis. I can see him running unless a lackluster field of Cuomo, Castro, Harris, Grayson, Bullock emerge and Warren, Sanders, Clinton, or Booker don't run.

He could be drafted to run, or he could be a compromise candidate at a broken convention.

I don't think he is thinking about running. The Democratic party probably would aim for a fresh face.  I think he would have a better chance of beating Trump than Hillary. Gore may be boring, at least he was not as disliked as Hillary. Gore was running against a more likable candidate.

I feel like in the Democratic Party we've embraced this nostalgia for the past that I feel like the GOP used to embody.

Real talk, why did Gore choose someone as awful as Lieberman as his running mate?

I've been wondering that for years.  Literally anyone else on the veep list would have been miles better than Joe Lieberman.  My guess is he wanted to double down on trying to separate himself from Clinton because Lieberman was the first Democrat to call him out publicly during the Lewinski scandal.  All this when Clinton consistently enjoyed approvals ranging in the 50s-60s.  Gore was a godawful campaigner.  It's amazing he fared better than McGovern.

Donna Brazile was Al Gore's campaign manager if that helps to explain why Gore's campaign was a mess.

No wonder the party is in the wilderness right now. It all makes so much sense. Lieberman has got to be one of the worst VP picks of all time. Al Gore was already a little off-putting as a more technocratic version of Clinton. Picking the quintessential northern elitist makes absolute no sense if you have any intention of doing well with Clinton coalition.

This.

But also on a serious note, even if he did run, he probably wouldn't survive primaries given how badly folks want a fresh face.

2017 Al Gore is much more left than 2000 Al Gore. In fact, I'd argue that modern Al Gore is actually slightly left of current party leadership.

Yes especially with his support of single payer and his focus on climate change.
