While I am pro-Israel in regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I will never allow a foreign entity's matters dictate the economic livelihoods of our southland. Firm nay.

Agreed, although I'm personality not supportive of trading sides  either way in the conflict.

I personally don't think this is something that should be discussed at the regional level, unless someone has any input as to why it belongs here.

I'm going to hold off on my opinion of the actual contents on the bill until there is some more discussion from the other delegates/when I can type from my laptop.

I also want to give Classic a chance to come in and speak on the bill, as it was filed on his behalf.

Why should the south stand behind Israel?

Israel remains the only free government in the entire middle east. They are a true democracy where even Arab citizens within the borders of Israel have the right to vote.

This is not something we see in Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt. All of the surrounding area is dominated by either dictatorships or absolute monarchies.

Israel has long been an ally of Atlasia and, by extension, of the South. We have an opportunity to stand up for our allies in a very visible way without putting significant constraints on the operation of commerce here in the South.

There are all kinds of trade agreements between allied countries around the world. We currently have one with Canada and Mexico. This is one way for us to stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters in the Levant.

Atlasia saved the lives of many Jews in the holocaust. And in turn, those Jewish people have greatly contributed to the prosperity of the South.

How so? Where else could an Arab actually vote in the middle east?

Israel is the only place where they can.

That's a good thing, but that doesn't mean we should pretend they are better than they are and bias our laws in their favor.

and how so? maybe doing occupation of palestinian territory

They are better. That's the point. Israel has full political freedoms.

Biasing the laws in favor of Israel would be a trade deal. All this does is make it clear that anyone who is deliberately boycotting Israel won't receive a government contract in the South.

This gives the clear appearance to me of being intended to pick sides on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

I'm not pro Palestine, I'm not anti-Semitic (the straw man of anyone who thinks that the Israeli government is in need of major any reform).

I'm neutral.

As a Southern delegate, this isn't my issue, as it is foreign policy.

As the bill is currently written, I cannot vote for it.

You don't see divestment is clearly taking a side of the conflict, in attempting to choke off investment in Israel.

Then why didn't you protect Palestine in the bill too?

I understand the importance of defensing Israel but I must reiterate, why should our economy be beholden to the security wellbeing of Israel?

Placing discussion temporarily on hold while we wait to see whether or not there are any objections to my motion to assume sponsorship of this bill.

I feel like I should mention that there's some ambiguous wording in this section:

If I'm right, it should probably be this instead:

^ agreed on the wording correction. I'll be sure to work to change that as long as no one objects to my motion to take sponsorship of this bill.

As 24 hours (well, actually more than that) has passed with no objections, i will now be assuming sponsorhip of this bill.

Now that this is taken care of, let's get back to discussion.

Divestment pretty clearly attacks financial investment in Israel. How is it picking sides when it's divestment that's picking sides? All this does is restore the balance. Restoring and protecting the investment that was already there is just status quo.

It's picking sides because it bans Israeli divestment but not Palestinian divestment.

It's not that hard.
