I've long held that Cortez and the Spanish conquistadors were actually the lesser of two evils. I mean yeah they were quite notoriously nasty, but the Aztec Empire was basically a 16th century New World version of Nazi Germany.

How was the Aztec empire like that? Kinda curious. Are you referring to sacrifices or something within the government itself?

That and that it was based around enslaving neighboring tribes.

The Aztecs would have been compelled to moderate by dint of economics, even in victory.

The Spaniards? Not so much.

Voted Aztecs.

Huh

The entire economy of colonial Mexico was based on slavery. Millions of Indians were worked to death in mining and agriculture by the encomienda system...

Tough choice between human sacrifices and the inquisition. Went with the Spanish.

Neither side was pleasant, but I suppose Spain. While I would never handwave the suffering that took place it was diseases more than anything which killed millions of natives (and there's also the irony that local tribes cheered for Cortez when he arrived due to just how much they hated and feared the Aztecs).

The inquisition was actually nowhere near as bad as it's commonly portrayed. The vast majority of people "convicted" under it were only fined and/or required to sign some sort of proclamation of faith.
