This is unlikely to work anyhow given that Governor Brown called into question where we could possibly get the funds from. I don't see future Governor Newsom fixing this either.

Although wanting more and paying less cuts both ways with conservatives and liberals. People want more spending but to pay less in taxes. They also want tax cuts but don't want spending cuts that affect them and their family (which is usually the vast majority of the federal budget anyhow).

To be fair, the only honest way to poll californians on this would be to bring up both higher taxes AND zero copayments/deductibles/premiums in the question.

Instead of on the California flag having "Republic of California" it should be renamed "Peoples Republic of California"

I have never heard that one before!

This is exactly why this can't work at the state level and has to be done nationally--part of single payer needs to control the cost of healthcare (as people still need to get paid, even if by the govt, for providing health services) and a state doesn't have the power to do so.

US voters don't like tax increases. News at 11.

The vast majority of policies would poll poorly if the polled question included a tax increase.

This is what's called a leading question.  Its good for message testing, but it doesn't give a complete picture of how the electorate views a given issue.

The question was asked both ways, so it seems quite fair. What is clear is that a single payer system is popular, until you look at how it will be paid for.

Jerry Brown likely wouldn't have supported it even if the state had perfect finances. It's against his whole "Zen" ideology.

There's no doubt that advocates of this bill will need a flawless campaign to win at the ballot box, but California voters are not afraid to raise taxes under the right circumstances. After all, voters in 2012 approved Prop 30 (Jerry Brown's tax increase). Unfortunately though, it's not easy messaging to explain to voters that any increase in taxes they pay would be offset by elimination of any premiums they or their employer might be paying. The authors of this particular proposal really need to get it right in terms of how it is to be paid for. I don't want to see this bill go far and suddenly get thrashed at the ballot box.

When they have a financing system simular to Social Security, it won't affect the state's budget. However, if passed, they should find some room for moderate middle-class tax cuts in return.

Have you looked at the federal budget?
