The biggest attention whore in the history of the Senate. He constantly interjects himself into each issue, in an attempt (that usually fails) to make himself the swing vote on almost every issue.

Joe McCarthy and Joe Lieberman say hi.

Still HP though, 8 years later, still salty.

Narrow FF because of his pro-life stance, but one of my least favorite Republicans in the Senate along with Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins.

I don't like most of his policies, but I honor his service and sacrifice. He's also a decent person. Mild FF.

Currently HP.

His brand has undergone perhaps the most changes of any politician in recent memory. His image on the center-left has gone from maverick reasonable Republican who got jibbed in South Carolina because of his adopted kids, who is liked by liberals, to standard Republican villain in 2008, to aging establishment survivor, to neoconservative warmonger, to victim-of-Trump-due-to-being-captured, to reasonable-Republican-at-least-with-respect-to-Russia-according-to-Democrats, and now it seems to guy-who-barks-loudly-but-never-follows-up. And that's only since 2000. He's been in the spotlight since 1973 and went through the whole Keating Five thing back in the Eighties.

Waaaaay too war-hawkish.  Also, saying Rand Paul was Putin's agent made think really negatively of him.

However, to repeat others here, I am thankful for his service.

His frequent desire to bomb pretty much every country in sight comes across as utterly disturbing. The fact that he's not a Trump supporter, teabagger, or religious fundamentalist speaks for him though. He also seems like a decent fellow... for a politician, I mean.

HP, but more of a lesser evil kind.

The fact that over 70 percent of people on here think an American Hero is an HP is disgraceful.

The fact that you believe anything out of his mouth is hilarious, on the other hand.

He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured? I like people who weren’t captured.

He has redeeming qualities, but I don't like him.

Regarding his heroics:
He is obviously a very brave man and a loyal American but is he a hero that rose above the rest?

Trump was right in the way Gen. Patton was right:
Martyrdom (being killed, captured, or crippled/dismembered), though is bigly commendable that someone would go through that for us all, isn't in itself a positive achievement.

If people want to elevate McCain to the level of some exemplar heroism, focus on what he has done instead of what was done to him.
