talk on Vote UK is that they have some discrepency in the numbers in Kensington (perhaps they're missing a few votes somewhere) and someone else leased the counting hall this morning so they have to stop now - they'll re-do the count elsewhere tonight and see if that fixes everything.

I hadn't realized so many constituencies had flipped from Labour to the Tories. Anything particular about these places?

very high leave vote

e.g. stoke on trent south

Ugh, that's worrying.

Often seats that didn't have a large Green+Lib Dem vote+ higher leave vote.

I'm still in shock about these results; and spend the night trying to work out what's happening. The seats that Labour won really mean that there is not one answer to why Labour did so well. Corbyn has absolutely gained a right to continue changing the Labour Party; and well we're going to having to be getting ready for a general election in October.

Six seats in total.

Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland was a marginal and always expected to go - perhaps Tory campaign ramped up there. Copeland was the main constituency where Jeremy's aversion for Trident is toxic.

Stoke on Trent South, Mansfield, Wallsall - could only be Brexit. Throughout their long history they've been foregone conclusions for Labour.

I am extremely happy for Corbyn.  He really gave all those clowns in the labour party a huge lesson.

He still lost though. With a different leader, Labour might be largest party at least - or May wouldn't have called the election in the first place.

Lib Dems were super unlucky this time around, with a lot of ridiculously narrow losses - Richmond Park, St Ives, NE Fife, Ceredigeon...

Brexit, no matter its density, would be a catastrophe for the entire country (not just Leavers)!

Interesting to note that the Survation poll has turned out to be most accurate prediction:

It would certainly be very risky for Sturgeon to push forward with a referendum right now. Losing two referendums in a row would look bad for the cause.

No, he polled much better, and that was before he had his surge.

Just noticed LD were wiped out in Wales. When was the last time there was no LibDem/Liberals/Whig MP in Wales? 17th century?

It'll be interesting to see how the usual anti-Corbyn brigade react to the fact that the potential new partners of the Tories openly welcome the support of a (still existing) terror organisation :

There's no proof, but the writing is on the wall. The Tory/DUP seat count is so thin and so fragile they'll never be able to get controversial legislation through. The Labour/not-Tory seat count is too fragmented and too slim to realistically hold power for much longer.

All things considered there weren't many. But you'll note a certain concentration of them in the Midlands, which is where this culture war bullsh!t was aimed at and where it was most successful (in fact in the Midlands outside e.g. Birmingham the Tories in general did well; classic swing votes stuck with the Tories this time). Additionally, demographic change in some seats (N.E. Derbyshire) and poor candidates in others (Mansfield would surely have been held with a better candidate than its useless incumbent). Some were also seats in which UKIP strategically stood down. But we'll get them back without much difficulty I suspect.

UKIP voters screwed the Tories tonight and for they are big fools as they voted for a far right candidate in 2015 and then far left in 2017.

If UKIP voted torie we would have had the tories up to 350 seats maybe instead of 319 .

Do you realize that many of the UKIP voters were actually working-class folks that felt abandoned by both political parties?

Unfortunately in the US, as opposed to the UK, there was no reason to come back home in '16 vs UK in '17.....

Both political parties in the US have sold working folks under the bus for decades.... in the UK there is still a fighting spirit left in working-class communities, and you actually had a "Left" or "Progressive" Labour Dem who wasn't afraid to speak truth to power to someone like Clinton (Vs Bernie) who talked the language and themes of the minority of upper income voters, while neglecting the reality of the rest of us 75% of Americans....

Anyways.... here's one of my favorite Scottish Folk songs from the 1950s...

Just a general question about the system: What's about the British oversees territories and expats? Aren't they allowed to vote or something?

As for the future, who knows? But there will be a serious fear of calling a further election.

Assuming that the Cornwall seats go Conservative and the Kensington Conservatives don't try anything to get the election thrown out, this is the final map.

Overseas Brits usually vote in the last constituency they had lived in/or a constituency where they have family; but you lose your vote after 15 yeas abroad. You have to re-register every year though, so a lot of people just end up falling off the register.

Kensington is having a third recount later today; count suspended for now

They think about doing the recount tomorrow.

It's ridicoulous really. All three counts have had Labour in the lead and now the Tories want a third recount. I can understand it's a hard thing to swallow, but they'll have to accept it eventually.

So the Tories are actually one or two seats up on labor in Scotland. When is the last time that happened?

Well, they were granted the recount, can't cancel now and the room is booked all day.
