HS. It sounds just awful and terrible to fathom. I would never do it. Another reason why if I was raised Muslim I would no doubt convert.

It doesn't seem particularly appealing but the idea of making armchair judgments about it is even less appealing (literally normal). Voted FS.

Voting FS since milquetoast, secular modernity deeply needs some form of resistance.

Sometimes I wonder if these guys over endulge due to the excessive fasting, because fasting during the entire sunlight hours (esp if it falls in the summer) is kind of unhealthy.

Fasting can easily lead to weight gain if it isn't done properly, so yes, overindulgence is common.

FS. My gym's completely empty in the evening now. On a more serious note, it should be tough but I completely understand how it is a great time to many Muslims, having dinner with friends and family in the evening.

Contemporary, "acceptable" belief involves zero to minimal sacrifice. It is heartening to see a large group of people be willing to alter their behavior considerably for an entire month on the basis of a belief system. You would likely find statistically few Christians doing this--even those I know who observe Lent do not appear to maintain regular church attendance.

FS. Muslims, including the ones I know, seem to love Ramadan and how it encourages them to focus on strengthening their faith, testing themselves, and doing away with many of life's distractions to establish better life balance and connection to the "divine." How someone could perceive that negatively is beyond me - and I'm an Atheist...

Another reason why if I was raised Muslim I would no doubt convert.

Oh yes, just as there's no doubt whatsoever that if you were born a Polynesian tribesman ca. 1340, you'd still find your way to a Minneapolis studio apartment.

I have a friend at my work who was raised Muslim who doesn't fast for Ramadan or follow any dietary laws and never wears a hijab. But I guess she doesn't live in a Minneapolis studio apartment but a suburban one with her sister and baby niece, so yeah, different.

From the military point of view attacking on Ramadan, when everybody's are openly off their guards, would be hell of an advantage, similarly to when Sadat launched his attack on Israel during Yom Kippur.

On the other hand, waging a war during Ramadan would inflame millions of Muslims. Seriously inflame.

Yes, because I loved getting presents on Christmas from who I thought was Santa(who I thought was real till I turned 8 )when I was little .Also I liked putting up a Christmas tree and going to Christmas parties .

Surely, if we needed some secular holiday to use an excuse to give and receive gifts, we could choose some secular holiday or construct a Cult of Reason like in Revolutionary France. Why not Thanksgiving? An obese pilgrim could clamber down every noble patriot's chimney in late November, granting the "gifts of liberty" to materialistic little children.
