KY, WV, TN, SC, AL, MS, LA, AR, MO, IN, OH, IA, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, WY, MT, UT, ID

Poor, poor, nashville knoxville chatanooga and memphis, growing black population, ditto, New Orleans and growing black population, poor and growing black population, ditto but with St Louis and Kansas City, Obama won in 2008 and Joe Donelly is senator, high 3rd party share and Obama won in 2012, ditto but with extra urban areas, heitkamp and fairly technocratic, technocratic, ditto but with omaha, ditto but with an imploding state gop, ditto, fair enough, has a democratic governor and senator as well as obama making it close in 08, fair enough, fair enough

Will all these reasons lead to dem wins in these states? Not necessarily, but I'm trying to show that it's silly to believe that the current political situation will last forever and that a landslide election with wins in 'safe r' states is literally impossible.

I am guessing all of them will eventually vote Democrat again sometime at least once. Though I suspect ID, WY, and probably OK won't vote Democrat in the next 40 years or so.

The most obvious one would be WY, right?  Coal + Mormons + Actual Cowboys + Libertarians + No Cities means that even if one faction leaves the GOP for good, they still have a lock on 55%.

You know how come there are states that will never vote Dem but there aren't states that will never go GOP?

Atlas' sage analysis is that the country is so polarized that even an Obama 2008 style victory is unattainable for either party.

I mean, you never know what can happen in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, etc. Colorado used to be pretty Republican like its neighbor states until Denver and its metropolitan area exploded

Wyoming is the first to come to mind. I've long believed that the only way a Dem in the modern era wins the state is if the GOP doesn't run a candidate, and even then the Dem would be vulnerable to the libertarian ticket or a write-in candidate.

I'm not ruling out Idaho - Boise's economy is on the up and up right now and tech is apparently becoming huge there, as is the indie music scene. It could certainly attract more Democratic-leaning voters over the years.

Idaho will vote Democratic before 2052. Believe me.

Wyoming? Not for a long time. But I won't say never.

Utah I also don't see voting Democratic, it'll likely take longer than Wyoming even.

Even though I think every one of these states will  vote Democratic at least once in my lifetime (God willing I live a while), this is probably the most realistic map.  These states have been the most Republican for the longest amount of time for several different reasons, so they're probably less liable to flip at a moment's notice.

Popular vote percentage denotes the chance that said state will never vote Democratic within our lifetimes (i.e., Wyoming has ~90% chance, Idaho has ~80% chance, etc.)

Define "never." Wyoming is one influx of UC-Boulder hippies away from being Vermont.

Wyoming, Idaho, and the Dakotas. Anything else is within the realm of possibility given shifting coalitions.

Definitely Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma, NE-3, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, and South Dakota. I do not see any of those states voting for the Democrats for the next 50-100 years barring any changes in voter patterns. I also feel that the Democrats are going to seriously underperform in Ohio and Iowa for the next 25 years.

No states. You can't predict a state will always vote Republican in the next 50 years today.

Mormon Indie, weak R, votes D by plurality.

It's hard enough for a Democrat to get 1/3 of the vote in Utah, much less the ~35-40% they'd realistically need to win in a plurality. Even Obama in 2008 barely got over 1/3 of the vote.

Its just the only way I see it happening, its very unlikely. It would probably help if the Dem was mormon, but Utah is a very R state no matter what.
