It's not out of the realm of possibility for Trump to support a Democrat in a future election, especially if he feels slighted by a Republican nominee (if a Republican presidential candidate spoke about him the way he spoke about Bush.) Could you see Democrats courting former President Trump for his endorsement?

Or is this something that wouldn't happen due to a combination of toxicity, especially to liberal activists, and age (meaning that Trump is unlikely to stick around long enough for his reputation to be less partisan.)

I think the only way for that to happen is if Trump somehow decides to adopt most or all of the current mainstream liberal positions on social/economic issues.
