I'm sorry, but any college town poll that does not include Tuscaloosa is not worth voting in.

No Bloomington, IN?  Sad That one's beautiful.  Palo Alto is amazing too, but it's not really a "college town."

Where's Lynchburg, VA? Even without Liberty, there's still two other decent sized colleges there.

Oh, also no Palo Alto, CA? Can't mention Cal without the rival of Stanford

No College Station, TX either? No Asheville, NC? No Bend or Salem, OR?

Tsk tsk.

I know people are going to be upset by the exclusion of numerous good college towns and cities. I'm sorry! I wanted to keep the list relatively short, so I only chose 1 from each state and only the ones that stood out to me. If this was a complete list there'd probably be over 75 or 100 places on it Tongue

Bloomington is my vote. If not, Madison, Columbus and Boulder are the top choices.

I haven't been to any of these, but it warms my heart that the gaping hellmouths known as Eugene OR and Pullman WA were omitted

If you're going to include Columbus, you may as well include Pittsburgh for Pitt, CMU, Duquense, plus a few small colleges.

The problem with the list from my perspective as an academic, is that it mixes university towns dominated by the campus (eg Champaign) with large cities that also host a university (eg Columbus). The cities in the second category aren't really university cities since there is so much more to them, but they have neighborhoods associated with their university. Minneapolis isn't on the list, but is similar to Columbus in that it is a large city that also has a neighborhood dominated by a large university.

I'm not sure I could really sell Champaign-Urbana to every single person I meet, but it was the absolutely perfect college town for me. Other good towns I like are Ann Arbor, Madison, and Austin.

Amen! To include Auburn is sinful. Ann Arbor, Ithaca for me. In fact, I basically agree with OP except it is hard to have Boulder that high because the racist behavior of the late 80s cannot be forgiven. Ever. Never ever.

I think closer to the 1500-2000 range Wink

I'd go with a list of those places with a school with at least 10K students, and a population no more than 10 times the student population. That should keep the number reasonable. Smiley

Sounds like you gave me a weekend project Tongue

(though I may tweak it slightly - Princeton immediately comes to mind as a college town that is not quite that high)

Champaign and Iowa City are both super awesome, while being pretty damn different for how similar they seem on paper (smallish Midwestern towns dominated by the university).
