Donald Trump announced his campaign for the Republican nomination for POTUS two years ago today.

Hardly anyone thought he could win the primaries or the general election back then. Jeb Bush was still the de facto presumptive nominee. How different the nation was only two years ago.

Interesting. The days immediately following were pretty tumultuous, with SSM and the ACA being upheld, and the Confederate Flag coming down from SC among other places.

I didn't think it would be Trump, I thought it would be Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, or Scott Walker.

I thought he could win

My dad laughed his ass off at Trump when he first announced then ended up voting for him
Yeah, I was the same. I hated Trump and thought his candidacy was a total joke but ended up not only voting for him, but enjoying his rallies and speeches.

I remember Democrats who cheered him on, thinking he would doom the Republicans' chances in 2016. I remember Republicans who said he disgusted them and that he would never represent the Republican Party or conservatism... and then unabashedly threw their full support behind him less than a year later. What a sad spectacle this has been.

Anyone remember when there was a conspiracy theory that Trump was sent by Clinton to win the primaries and make her president?

I never thought Trump could win, and this theory was always sitting in the back of my head...

I think he timed it just to overshadow Jeb, I mean announcing the day after the presumptive frontrunner?  Tell me that's a coincidence with a straight face I dare you.

With all due respect, I considered Walker the frontrunner then because I thought there was enough of an anti-establishment mood to beat Jeb and because the two were already tied in the polls.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well, especially as the attacks progressed.

We know he constantly threatened as much from Day 1 until the day Cruz dropped out.

What Bush-Clinton rematch would be complete without a Perot?

Clinton also formally launched in the same week.

I truly didn't take his candidacy seriously for months. I thought he was just being an attention whore and would drop out before Iowa. How I wish I was right.

We laughed at him because the media portrayed his candidacy as a joke, and we associated Trump with things like gaudy gold furniture, reality TV, and WWE. But the more he spoke, the more we realized we actually agreed with him on most issues. He stuck his finger in the eyes of everyone in both parties who we all disliked so much. As crazy as it sounds, it was not about Trump. Trump's campaign was a vehicle to get the kind of country we wanted. That is what the media never understood about Trump until after election day - this was not a cult of personality, it was a movement that was ignited by Trump.

I was adamantly opposed to Trump during the GOP primary, but once he won the nomination fair and square, I knew who I was voting for. As much as I dislike Trump's behavior and lack of an ideological devotion to conservatism and strong policy knowledge, there was no way I was voting for the ultra-liberal agenda of Hillary.

I woke up on election day and nearly vomited, thinking about the Hillary presidency and the Democratic Senate. I showed up to the Trump election night party in NYC, depressed, and the mood was like that of a funeral. Oh how things changed rapidly in just a few hours. It was the night that we saved America from Obama's 3rd term, European style socialism, open borders, radical Islam, liberal Supreme Court, high taxes and regulations.

I was in the same position. I was at a Rubio party that was also pretty much a Trump party. I knew Rubio would win but thought it would be a depressing night on the presidential level. However, the night got better as Trump continued to win, and seeing Rubio winning by so much gave me some hope. When they called FL, everyone screamed so loudly it looked like New Years. I still get chills thinking about it (and watching the video)

I knew Hillary would lose to a Northerner or minority, both there just so the GOP could say "hey guys were nawt just Southern whites!". In short, it'd be a reverse shot of 1976 where Democrats sought a Southerner to try and hold Nixon's Southern Strategy back.

I just figured Scott Walker or Marco Rubio would be the Jimmy Carter-esque foil to Hillary's obvious Ford.

And I figured it'd be Virginia, Colorado, NH, and Nevada that cost the election, with Wisconsin as a possibility.

I was right about the outcome, but wrong about the steps to get there...

I completely underestimated the power racism truly has in America. I think we all did.

It became pretty clear to me early on that he was the Romney (albeit with differing views) of the 2016 race, i.e. that the race would be defined as him vs. everyone else.

Romney didn't make the race about his ego, but he made the race about the issues and Obama.

Trump presidency isn't catastrophic to me any longer, due to the fact, Dems are empowered by this set back, thus Dems have a fighting chance to have a more unified party under Cory Booker and Veep Hickenlooper in 2020 and control all three branches by then. Hopefully, the House in 2018.

It might be the case that someone as stupid, unelectable, and lazy as Hillary was sent by Trump to win the primaries and make him President.
