This is exactly why I totally buy Abbott having lukewarm approval ratings. The man makes absolutely no secret of his bigotry.

It won't happen, this is just fearmongering by people who are hellbent on fighting against an imaginary threat of a Christian Theocracy that much of the left believes is real.

If I were a governor, I would sign these bills just to troll the left.

Yeah, the 1980s aren't over for a lot of Boomer leftists and they won't let go.

It's obvious that Abott didn't think at all. This is totally ridiculous and heartless.

The headline specifically says the Texas governor has signed this bill into law and there is a link provided for you to explore the text of that law which is detailed in the article. Child welfare service providers are now legally allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ youths and forcefully place them, along with other religious minorities, into Christian educational institutions. How many providers will choose to do that? Who knows. Probably not many, really. But, the fact remains, the Texas legislature and the governor have signed-off on this legislation that would legalize discrimination. There is no fearmongering about that. It is clearly outlined in the text, which anyone who is literate and possesses critical thinking skills could comprehend.

An irrelevant county Clerk (Kentucky has 120 IIRC).

Would a country that was under any threat of becoming a Theocracy have legal birth control, abortion, and SSM, all supported by at least 50% of the population and overwhelmingly supported by major corporations?  Even when these things weren't legal America wasn't a Theocracy.

Not surprised. The lieutenant gov. there tweeted this on the day of the Orlando shooting.

I'll read the text of the bill later.

Lots of people want to discriminate against gays—albeit fewer than 20 or 50 years ago—and this law gives them legal cover. If you're a straight person who thinks this doesn't happen because you haven't seen it, that's fine but consider that your experience is not definitive.

You know for a guy without working legs, Greg Abbott is one of the least empathetic politicians in recent memory...even for Texas.

Governor Wheelie here managed to nab $6 million from a man after he was crushed by an oak tree branch, before championing legislation that imposed limits on such lawsuit awards.  Bad (or sick) guy!

Amazing how in 2017 religion can still be used as a weapon against certain types of people.

It's sad that "religious freedom" has turned into the dog whistle for homophobia, just as "states' rights" is for racism.

Don't deny the power of the Dominionist movement in the American Right.

Don't deny the power of the Dominionist movement in the American Right.

It has no power.

Corporations and wealthy donors have the power in both major parties.  And corporations, whether they support Republicans or Democrats, almost unanimously take liberal stances on social issues.  That's why social conservatives haven't been very successful.

Why should corporations take socially conservative stances? Businesses have to expand their consumer bases. That means selling to people that the God-botherers might sometimes find distasteful. Why should businesses lose money just to appease the fragile sensibilities of the superstitious?

You people want to turn Western civilization into your own safe space. In the process, the social conservatives will reveal themselves to be the collectivists they always have been.

That's absolutely abhorrent. Texans deserve better than the fanatics they currently have governing them.
