People outraged at a presentation of Julius Caesar with a Trump stand-in in NYC are now calling in vicious death threats and rape threats to companies with "Shakespeare" in the name—theaters or otherwise.

How very strange that there was no outrage five years ago, when they did the same thing.
I can't imagine what possible difference there could be.

It's all rather vile. And the reaction of corporate sponsors pulling out reminds me how uneasy I was at the "victory" of getting sponsors to withdraw from various trashy tabloid right outlets - all it does is highlight the degree to which corporations control the arts, and will protect their bottom line by any means.

And yes, one would have to be an extraordinary dunce to think that Julius Caesar advocates for political assisinations; not to mention the play (like most of Shakespeare's tragedies) is constantly reappriaoted to fit in with contemporary figures - heck Shakespeare himself was probably writing with a certain senile queen in mind.

Funnily enough, I was just flipping through the play in question, and found this line:

Julius Caesar, Act IV, Scene III

Seriously, though, this whole "controversy" is a bunch of nonsense garbage, and it's a shame, if unsurprising, that large swaths of the population are drawing the connotation that artists = enemies.

I would have thought you'd approve. Isn't engaging in political activism by disrupting someone else's stage all the rage these days. Surely these people are just engaging in the fine American tradition of engaging in political activism through direct action and civil disobedience, or do you not approve of direct action and civil disobedience?

If we weren't in the Dark Timeline, conservatives would be loving the Shakespeare in the Park production with a female Julius Caesar in a pantsuit.

Nah. They'd be simultaneously upset that the production was letting a woman play Caesar, and complaining about how it legitimized Hillary's dictatorial ambitions. (They'd be fine with the murder scene though, and images of it would be making the rounds of anywhere vaguely GOP-leaning on the internet for the next 10 years. Trump would probably tweet one.)

There are obvious non-parallels, but I can imagine a setting of Julius Caesar place in April 1865 with you-know-who as the victim.

I fail to see how one woman running on stage and calling the crowd out is comparable to antifa cracking skulls on campuses, but whatever.
He's just pissed that his fifteen minutes of fame ended with him being punched. Cernovich and company didn't (and shouldn't have) stood up for him,

Maybe because one is is fully supported endorsed by one of the major parties in this country, and the other is literally about 1000 college kids with zero support from the Democratic Party question mark but hey a false equivalency is false. Go figure, it's another Sanchez post

Caesar's assassins are clearly and definitively shown as making a wrong and calamitous decision and paying for it with their lives and the destruction of everything they believe in. Anyone who comes out of that play thinking "Shakespeare supports assassination" missed the entire point of the production. Brutus and Cassius lose everything and destroy the last vestiges of the Republic they loved and ended up losing their own lives as Caesar's vengeful heirs use the tragedy to consolidate power.
