Federalist
George Washington: For obvious reasons. I guess technically he's not a Federalist, though.

(Democratic-)Republican
It's either James Monroe or Thomas Jefferson. I think the latter is overrated. He paid tribute to Barbary nations even after he defeated Tripoli, was rather hyprocritical in regard to slaves, and his Embargo Act harmed the US more than it did the UK or France. Monroe was pretty good except for the fact that he opposed federal construction of roads and canals in the West but at the same time constructed lighthouses and other coastal improvements to facilitate trade in the East Coast. His policies during the Panic of 1819 also failed to end the economic depression.

Whig
Zachary Taylor: All the Whig presidents were either mediocre or bad. I just like Taylor because he opposed the extension of slavery, supported admitting California as a free state, and threatened to attack any state that seceded. But then again, he himself owned a lot of slaves...

Democrat
Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Even though I oppose most of the policies in the New Deal, at least he gave hope to the country during the crisis, something Hoover never did, and his leadership was admirable. He supported the UK even before the US got into the war. Roosevelt led the United States into victory against Nazi Germany and nationalist Japan during World War II.

Republican
Abraham Lincoln: He saved the Union and ended slavery! Theodore Roosevelt was also an awesome president, so he is the second-best Republican.

My favorite Republican President is Ronald Reagan.
The only Democrat President I have a favorable opinion of is Franklin Pierce.
I liked William Henry Harrison a lot as a kid but have no basis for a favorite Whig President.

I would be interested in reading why you, or anyone else for that matter, has a favorable opinion of Franklin Pierce.

More process of elimination than anything else.  Only Democrat President who did nothing that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Least bad:

Democratic: Grover Cleveland
Republican: Chester A. Arthur
Whig: Ehh.. Emm.. William Henry Harrison for dying so soon into his presidency and thus doing nothing. Except that gave us President Tyler... umm.. better change that.
Federalist: George Washington
Jacobin Republican: Thomas Jefferson.. Yes, despite everything.

And his support for the Act that led to Bleeding Kansas and his shameless imperialism in trying to conquest Cuba doesn't leave a bad taste? Pierce was one of the most indecisive, easily-manipulated presidents the USA has ever had, and in my opinion the worst, together with Buchanan.

Federalist
George Washington. John Adams could have been great, but he was overborne by his temperment.

Democratic-Republican
I would actually believe it would be John Quincy Adams. He had lofty ideals of creating and cultivating the arts and education of the country. He may not be a popular choice, but I believe him to have been good.

Whig
This is a tough one, considering the Whig's most eminent man, Henry Clay, was always doomed to second place finishes. He or Webster were the best of the party, and they took neither. Shame. Of the group, I have to say Taylor was the least damaging.

Democrat
This is an obvious choice. Franklin Roosevelt is the standard by which all modern President's are measured. You may not like it, but it's true.

Republican
I can't pick. There were two great Republicans in Lincoln and TR, I'll call it a tie.

^^^

But LBJ wasn't sufficiently neoliberal for most on the forum...his social programs targeted both impoverished minorities and whites, and the VRA and CRA was epitomized the inherent good an activist government can bring about

TR was great too:  estate tax qualifies him in my book to be in the top five
