Former Democratic Rep. Brad Ashford is looking at running again for the House in 2018 against the man that defeated him in the Trump wave year, Rep. Dan Bacon. It is a R+4 seat, a seat that Trump won by R+1 point in 2016, but a seat that Romney won by R+7 in 2012 and Obama won by a slim D+1 in the 2008 Democratic wave year. It is in the Omaha suburbs.

It looks like a nasty, competitive House race along with potentially the Senate and governor's race for a Midwestern state like Nebraska.

He certainly has a very good chance if he runs.

This seat is a prime pickup opportunity, but I'm not sure if the Democrats would be best served by running a retread. Who else is on the bench in this district?

Half the Omaha City Council?

I wonder if this'll turn into a NH-01 type situation where it just trades off between Ashford and Bacon every two years.

I'll admit, a redux of the legendary Dold-Schneider feud would be hilarious.

The fact that Ashford couldn't run ahead of Hillary Clinton as an incumbent leads me to heavily doubt his political abilities. If NE-02 voted for Trump by double digits, I could understand Ashford's 2016 loss.  If you can't run a point ahead of your Presidential nominee as an incumbent with the franking privelidge, you shouldn't be in Congress.

He did beat a Republican incumbent in 2014 of all years.

He did and I think he can again, but I'd rather see a candidate who actually has the political skills to hold the seat long term run.

Pete Festersen is the most electable potential candidate in that district.

How the heck does this dude unseat an 8 term republican incumbent from nebraska in red wave year, 2014, and then fall over like a limp noodle two years later?

I was just about to write that, too.

Lee Terry was a bit of an oddball, IIRC.

As long as they dont elect a corrupt incumbent maybe not, we learned that the hard way
