It isn't about individualism and more about a cliche?

I'm a fan of legitimate, ontological and methodological individualism. American "rugged individualism" is one of the most collectivistic personal philosophies on the planet.

More of a catchphrase than anything else. It's like saying 'opinion of hard-working American families' or whatever.

Like people who tell you they are proud they have worked 70 hours a week the last 10 years and have nothing to show for it and think that people who have done less and ask for more are greedy and lazy. That doesn't make you loyal or righteous, it makes you a tool and a cuck.

True, but I prefer the folks who use the corny catchphrase over those who'd hate the idea of "rugged individualism."

Obviously it's a Freedom Opinion to smart, strong and capable humans.  If you're dumb, weak and screw up prone it's not a very good opinion to have.  Thankfully in 2017 (in the West) you can survive just fine if you're dumb and weak.  It's clearly better to live in a place and time where you don't have to be a "rugged individualist" to survive.

I personally skew 'tender individualism' but 'individualism' generally speaking is preferable to 'collectivism'

If "rugged individualism" means that you don't have to be 18 to leave your parents' home and cut them off, I'm for it. If "rugged individualism" means abolishing social security, I'm against it.

A cliche, but I still voted FI becasue I do generally prefer the idea of individualism to that of collectivism.

Hot take: is it the right wing version of "tune in, drop out"?

I guess one could say that, since school is collectivist.

Yeah, but instead of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll, its inefficient poorly paid back breaking labor, occasionally abbreviated by walking barefoot through miles in the Malaria infested swamp and deep snow to binge drink on cheap dark liquor, to engage in disfiguring fist fights, and to have consensually ambiguous sex!

Charming when applied to cowboys, absolutely obnoxious when held up by Republican politicians and neckbearded net libertarians who would most likely crumple and die of exhaustion after a day of camping in the woods.

Rugged individualism doesn't have to apply to camping, LOL.
