I know we're technically between sessions right now, but I hope we can discuss this when the dust settles and our next session begins.

I wrote this legislation in an effort to tackle the issue of childhood obesity by promoting activity in sports and general exercise outside of schools. Lower income children are more likely to become overweight or obese due to the lack of availability of affordable, healthy food. This initiative seeks to involve children who may not be able to afford the cost of organized sports to still become involved anyway.

I'm looking forward to hearing comments from my colleagues.

Does cheerleading count as an organized sport?

Also, I think section five is very broad.  How much would it cost to give every child in the country playground equipment?

I would count it as such, yes.

The section is supposed to refer specifically to equipment for organized sports to low income children. Perhaps we could set an income level to define "low income"?

I would support setting a cutoff, so it doesn't get abused mercilessly. Say 150% of the poverty line?

I'd be willing to work with this.

Bump

I would be willing to table this if there isn't a lot of interest in passing it right now.

I could definitely vote for this, but I would like some more input from other senators...

I was recently reading about athletic preferences at universities and how so many university sports are traditionally upper-class pursuits, such as athletic preferences often serve as a benefit for the wealthy. In addition to other benefits, giving children from more humble means the chance to participate in sports they otherwise couldn't would serve as a cheap and noninvasive way to give them a small hand up going on to the next step of life.

I do apologize to Senator R2D2 for not commenting on this bill earlier, but it was merely through me having no objections to its provisions.

I will happily support its passage.

This bill has gained my support. Child obesity is a major problem, and I believe that the federal and regional governments of Atlasia both must involve themselves in the effort to combat this epidemic. This bill effectively involves both of the aforementioned types of governments by having the federal government finance regional governments, the latter of which in turn finances organized sports with the federal money. I am of the opinion that financing organized sports is a good way to help reduce childhood obesity because it gives children an opportunity to exercise while also having fun.
