Under the newly passed absentee voting law, voters have only 24 hours prior to an election to request an absentee ballot because candidates may apply for a spot on the federal ballot no more than 24 hours before the election occurs.  I authored this bill primarily so that voters may have up to three days to request an absentee ballot.

I like this idea.  Another perk might be if everyone declares their candidacy a little earlier, maybe we'll see more posts on the AFE board instead of having people jump in at the last minute without time to campaign.

I like this change. When I started out, any elected office required you to declare a week ahead of time. That was excessive, but having it just be a day, as Senator Siren points out, makes it hard for much campaigning to happen if someone jumps in that late. I was skeptical of the absentee balloting law, but if it gets us this as well then that is dandy.

Yes, I agree. It seems to be a problem with people jumping in and out of races for the sake of convenience.

I remember the original use of absentee voting (as should Senator PiT and several others) and was never very thrilled with it, but I do agree that the law should be more amenable to allowing those wishing to use that option.

Also, I think there's a bit too much flippancy when it comes to making candidate declarations and the like so a seventy-two hour deadline is an acceptable solution.

Yes, old-style absentee voting was terrible and should never return. For those who don't remember, people could vote in it at a whim and spend as much time on the forum as they pleased over the election. It only served to greatly elongate the election, as it got to the point where half of the votes were cast in the "absentee" booth.

Debate and activity have been rather dead this week, so I'll move to a final vote in 24 hours barring any objection.

The President has vetoed the original bill passed by the House and Senate and has submitted a redraft.
