In 2048, after controlling the White House for the previous 12 years, the Republicans were defeated by a new style Democrat, her election was a rejection of the Republican policies of the previous two administrations, there were changes in the electoral map, Florida lost 4 electoral votes after the 2040 census, those electoral votes ended up going to Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and Colorado, Arizona lost 1 electoral votes to New Mexico. California hit the 60 electoral vote. This map demonstrates how the election was a decisive victory for the Democrats.

However while the Democrats had made dramatic gains, these were inevitable considering how four years previously Republicans had sustained noticeable but not to large enough to impact that party's dominant position on the electoral scene.
Now by examining the 2044 electoral map, one can imagine the attrition would be inevitable.

Overall Democrats picked 218 votes in the electoral college, winning Mississippi & South Carolina for the first time in 72 years and for the first time in 84 years, Alaska went Democratic.
