Please post your personal favorite national flags and also try to describe what you like about them. You can also post U.S. state and Canadian provincial flags.

My favorite country flag is probably the Union Jack (flag of the United Kingdom). It's very nice, I like the colours and I like the crosses that represent the different constituant countries (the red cross in the form of a ''t'' is the cross of St. George, it represents England; the white cross in the form of an ''x'' is the cross of St. Andrew, it represents Scotland; and the red cross in the form of an ''x'' used to represent Ireland, and now it represents Northern Ireland. My favorite flag of a province of another country is the flag of Québec, I like the contrast of colours, it's a blue flag with a white cross on it and Quebec's French heritage is well represented by the 4 Fleur-de-Lys (translates to lily flower, it's the historic symbol of the Capétiens, the French royal family). And my favorite flag of a US state is the flag of Maryland, I like the medieval coat of arms look to it (it's based of the coat of arms of the Earls of Baltimore, the founders and early governors of the colony and the namesake of the city of Baltimore, Maryland).

In no particular order: the Union flag, Canada's Red Ensign (specifically the version in use from 1957 until 1965), the Russian Imperial flag (1858–1883), the Japanese rising sun, and the star-spangled banner.

Great nations have great flags.
