I love that some people were actually willing to believe that NPR of all things would be the vanguard of the proletarian revolution.

Well, the Declaration was in fact an incitement to revolution. Smiley

Seriously, though, this doesn't surprise me at all.  Not so much for the partisanship but simply because most of the American people are sufficiently ignorant of history as to not recognize it.  This isn't new; I recall a news story 20 or 30 years ago where some students were circulating the Bill of Rights on the streets as a petition.  Most people refused to sign, with many accusing the students of being subversives.  ONE person, out of dozens, acknowledged recognizing the Bill of Rights.

These "revolutionaries" are the equivalent of John Dickinson (PA) and the southern caucus, which didn't even want to leave England.

The extremely silly thing is that NPR has been doing readings of the Declaration of Independence each July 4th for decades now.

Not really. Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense months before and nearly ninety other declarations were made by other organizations prior to the Continental Congress.

The declaration of independence is a disgusting document, it's well past time that someone stood up and said something.

I assume satire but why, if you're serious?

The funniest part of the tweetstorm was when they got to the part where the Declaration refers to Native Americans as "murderous savages" and all the liberals cheering for previous tweets were like "Wait, what?"

The Constitution and belief in American democratic political ideals are the only thing that hold this country together. Not just the letter of the law, but the spirit of it. It was defended by every generation from 1776 until today, but doesn't just continue like a force of nature... it must be continuously renewed and defended. Upholding these things are the true nationalism, and patriotism.

Well, yes, I know that, but you get my point. Out of all the old documents they only care about that portion. Everything else is considered evil.

At least some of the Tea Party read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; this new breed of Trumpist conservative hasn't even done that.

Also ironic that these are the same people that accuse the left of being triggered at the drop of a hat. The right won, and they're still a bunch of whiners who are outraged at everything.

Totally agreed. People not recognizing the letter of the Declaration of Independence is not a problem in itself, but it does make me worry about the quality of civics education that citizens today receive. If people are not conversant in the tradition underpinning American democracy, I worry that their command of both the theory and practice of democracy will necessarily also suffer. There is certainly enough stuff going on today on both sides of the aisle to make me question the competency of the modern citizen without dealing with this.

The Constitution and Declaration are just suggestions on how to run a decent government, not Holy Writ. Worshiping them as civic religion while failing to understand, practice and implement good, democratic government is a recipe for disaster and the destruction of the Republic, as we are seeing.

To think how the world would be different if Britain had just given Americans seats in parliament.

"Unfit to be the ruler of a free people"

That would fit on a bumper sticker.
