I'm guessing a few million dollars at the most.

What would be the main items on which this would be spent?

Most of the costs would involve sending the receipts, unless I'm missing something.

I'd imagine the people doing the work would like to be paid for the extra time spent doing this, as well.

That being said, I get why this could be a good idea, I just don't know if it is feasible. Especially since tax return time is the busiest time of year, they already have a lot on their plates, and now this is just adding them more by having to calculate and itemize everything each individual citizen's tax money went to.

For one, all they have to do is figure out what % of tax money goes where, and then multiply by the amount of tax they payed.

Also, they could hire someone or a small team to do the work instead of giving all that work to existing positions.

I feel like this is just a waste of time and money to do it for everyone. Maybe just do it for people who request it...

I would respectfully disagree, on grounds because the average person might not give enough thought as to request this. We should push people into thinking critically about how their tax dollars are spent, not winnow it down to a small group.

So, are the receipts just going to explain the budget or is it going to have the specific thing that this person's money went too?

I presume both?

I would assume it explains how many "real dollars" (of theirs) go to each program in the government. Just their payed in tax dollars multiplied by each % of the budget.

No one's tax dollars go to anything *in particular*, because most payments are electronic or made as checks.

That would be like if 3 people put a gallon of water in a bucket and then one of them wanted *their* gallon back.

After getting some input from the governor (in which he said he's likely veto it), I'm suspending the final vote and putting the following amendment on the floor.

Nothing against anyone, but I just believe our money could be spent better else where. Lets be honest here, 99.9% of the citizens will just throw this away without really looking at it, because most people truly don't care. Why not just take the 20 million you are going to use for this and just give it back to the people, it will be better used that way. Tongue

I love how some Federalists are against something that would make it easier for citizens to know what the government is doing, because "it would be kinda expensive".

This is literally asking for like one ten-thousandth of the budget surplus.

No objection to the amendment though.
