I mean,
No offense as I know that you are all having good intentions.

But there is a potential massive problem with this bill: if you let citizens have the possibility to change their mind for a next week, they will get harassed by massive sociopaths!!!

Why not simply pass the former rule: no deregistration during the election?

I actually like this idea better.

My concern with Chief Justice Windjammer's proposal is that I have seen hotheaded deregistrations at other times as well. With that said, I do recognize the concern of deregistering posters being harassed. This is a bit of a puzzle here.

Hearing no objection, the amendment is adopted.

Unfortunately, there's not much we can do here to prevent harassment, no matter what restrictions we impose on deregistration.  I'm fine with restricting deregistration during elections again, as Barnes' amendment will do.

Well getting rid of the first and second sections of this Bill would be a good start. People are going to get harassed if these 2 sections become laws.

Deregistration period is an open invitation to harassment either way. If you have ban on returning for a set period like pre-reset, then that is an incentive to harass people as a means to drive people from the game.

I think the onus is on those unscrupulous fellows who behave like your average garden rat rather than any person who sees the light and decides to deregister.

Guilt, responsibility, choose your term. My point being, this is a game, and to act as if we can control people from leaving is silly.

Rather, we should focus on rooting out those who make it an uncomfortable and unwelcoming place to begin with.

A large percentage of the people who have left by "deregistering", end up returning. Most of those who fell off the rolls typically have remained gone.

I think there is at least some benefit for some kind of waiting period.

My point was the risk for harassment is equally present with or without that. I suppose your perspective is one of fear of harassment forcing people to stay. Mine is more a fear of harassment pushing people to leave, which occurs regardless of a waiting period being present.

I think legitimate harassment is unacceptable in any form, and I know you feel the same, Yankee.

I think deregistration should carry no penalty with it, therefore if it is done by mistake or without thinking, one can simply jump back in.

And agin, I am perfectly fine with a waiting period, but I could see it being shortened to two or three days.

This is too much hand-holding for my tastes.

Just think of all the crazy people we were fortunate enough to get rid of in the past and all the bullets we've dodged due to binding deregistration, and how if this bill as-is were in effect at moments in the past, it could have all been different. We may have never had a successful ConCon resolution if masses of people could suddenly take back their claims.

On the other hand, deregistration isn't a death sentence: it's a two-month cooldown and it literally stops nobody from "playing the game" (and often hasn't) other than in actually running for office or voting. And jambles is right: every time somebody tries to deregister under such a system, there's going to be somebody or somebodies blowing up their inboxes and begging them to reconsider.

I thought one of the main points of deregistration (since we don't have permanent registration as an alternative) was to be left the hell alone. Literally the only reason somebody who's done playing the game would care if their name remains on the rolls is because they don't want any more PMs.

I agree with Griffin here. Deregistration should primarily function as an "off button," allowing users to immediately stop being bothered with the game. imo that interest should take priority over a speedy return. On a slightly related note, I think most folks who deregister "in the heat of the moment" may, y'know, benefit from some time off anyways

It looks like everyone except Alpha (*cough*) has stated their position now.  I'll keep the floor open for another day or two, and then call for a vote.

Sorry - this has enough votes to pass.  Senators have 24 hours to change their vote.
